Motor mounts secure the engine to the chassis, reducing vibration and keeping everything aligned. Over time, they wear out, making replacement necessary for a smooth ride. Expect removing the old mounts to be easier than installing the new ones due to their design—new mounts are stiffer and taller. Lift the front of the car with a floor jack and secure it on jack stands. Remove the front wheels completely. Step 2: Remove Underbody Components Take off the belly pan under the engine using a 10mm (3/8 inch) wrench or socket to remove its bolts. Remove the front sway bar. Step 3: Remove Motor Mount Shields and Nuts Unbolt the motor mount heat shields using a 10mm socket to remove the M6 bolts. Remove the lower motor mount lock nuts with a 17mm wrench. Step 4: Remove Upper Mount Bolts Undo the upper motor mount bolts using a 13mm wrench or a flex-head ratchet with a 13mm socket. These bolts are tricky to reach. If your S2 still has older full-rubber mounts, hold the bottom nut with another 13mm wrench while loosening. Step 5: Support the Engine Place a block of wood or a 12-inch x 12-inch piece of plywood on your floor jack as a cushion. Position it under the oil pan and gently jack up the engine just enough to take the weight off the motor mounts. Step 6: Loosen the Cross-Member Use a sharp tool (like a scribe) to mark around the cross-member mounting bolts (4 per side) so you can realign them later. Loosen the cross-member bolts with a 19mm socket until they’re almost out. For ease, remove each one fully, then thread it back in two turns. Step 7: Remove Old Motor Mounts With the engine jacked up slightly and the cross-member loosened, slide the old motor mounts out. You might need a pry bar to lift one side of the engine a bit more. Twist the mounts as you pull them out since they fit into a pocket in the cross-member. Step 8: Prepare New Motor Mounts (Optional) If the threads in the new motor mounts’ bolt holes look shallow, use an M8 tap to clean them out. This prevents stripping when you install the bolts. Step 9: Install New Motor Mounts For the right-side mount, use two 900 378 024 02 (8 x 38 mm) bolts with N 015 401 3 washers. Discard any old spacer washers if present—they’re not needed with new-style mounts. For the left-side mount, measure the thickness of the ledge at the bottom of the mounting bracket. If it’s 21 mm thick, use two 900 378 024 02 (8 x 38 mm) bolts. If it’s 25 mm thick, use two 900 378 034 02 (8 x 42 mm) bolts. Add N 015 401 3 washers. Using the wrong length can damage the mount. Step 10: Reassemble and Torque Reverse the removal steps: Tighten the cross-member bolts to 85 Nm (62 ft-lbs) with a 19mm socket, aligning them with your scribe marks. Reinstall the upper mount bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft-lbs) with a 13mm socket, and torque the sway bar bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft-lbs) with a 13mm socket. Reattach the heat shields, belly pan, and wheels. Post Procedure Checklist Check that all bolts are torqued to the correct specs: cross-member at 85 Nm (62 ft-lbs), upper mount and sway bar bolts at 23 Nm (17 ft-lbs). Lower the car and test-drive 5 miles (8 km) to ensure no unusual vibrations or noises. Inspect under the car for any loose parts or leaks.
