The pressure might dip to 2 bar on very hot days or in very hot regions. If the reading consistently falls below 2 bar, it may signal a problem with the main or rod bearings. Ensure the engine is off and the ignition is in the OFF position. Step 2: Disconnect the Oil Pressure Sending Unit Locate the oil pressure sending unit on the engine block, near the oil filter housing, . Carefully disconnect the electrical lead (blue and white wire) from terminal “G” on the oil pressure sending unit. Note the lead’s position for reconnection. Step 3: Set Up the Variable Resistance Potentiometer Connect the multimeter to the variable resistance potentiometer to measure resistance – the negative to one of the outer posts and the positive to the middle post. Using the dial, adjust the potentiometer to one of the resistance values listed in the table below, corresponding to the oil pressure for the Porsche 944. Return to Step 3 to adjust the potentiometer to each resistance value listed in Step 3 and verify the gauge reading for each setting. Step 6: Evaluate Results and Troubleshoot If the gauge readings match the expected values for all resistance settings, the oil pressure gauge is functioning correctly. If the gauge reads correctly during this test but shows abnormal readings during engine operation, the oil pressure sending unit (944 606 203 00) may be faulty and should be replaced.(See Step 7 below) If the gauge readings are inconsistent or incorrect, inspect the wiring, connections, or the gauge itself for faults. Typically, one terminal is grounded, and the other is the signal (connected to terminal “G”). Perform measurements under different conditions to capture the sender’s response to varying oil pressures: Engine Off (Ignition ON): Measure resistance with the engine off but ignition ON. This provides a baseline reading, which may correspond to zero or very low pressure. Engine Running at Idle (Cold): Start the engine and let it idle while cold (shortly after startup, before it warms up). At cold idle, oil pressure should be around 4.5-5 bar, so resistance should be approximately 155.0-184.0 ohms, based on the provided table. Engine Running at Idle (Warm): Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature (oil temperature stabilized, typically around 2.5-3 bar at idle). Measure resistance again; it should correspond to the expected pressure (e.g., 98.9 ohms for 3 bar). At Different Engine Speeds: If possible, measure resistance at higher engine speeds (e.g., 2,000 rpm, 4,000 rpm) to capture the sender’s response across a range of pressures. At 5,000 rpm, oil pressure should be around 4 bar, so resistance should be around 133.6 ohms. Step 8: Alternative Sender Test If desired or necessary, run this additional test on the sender – Oil Pressure Sender – Bench Test – to determine if it is functioning correctly. Post Procedure Checklist Ensure the oil pressure sending unit lead (blue and white wire) is securely reconnected to terminal “G.” Verify no tools or test leads are left in the engine compartment.
