Body Steering Wheel Removal and Installation – 2.5L NA Estimated reading: 4 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure outlines how to remove and install the steering wheel on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine configuration, covering both pre-1985.5 (1983–1985.5) and 1985.5 onwards (1985.5–1988) models. It’s essential for tasks like replacing the steering wheel, accessing steering column components, or performing repairs involving the horn or airbag system. The process differs significantly between non-airbag (pre-1985.5) and airbag-equipped (1985.5 onwards) models, so follow the steps specific to your vehicle. Tools Required Metric socket set T30 Torx socket (85.5 Onwards) 24 mm (15/16 inch) socket Ratchet Small flat-tip screwdriver (for aftermarket wheels, if applicable) Paint pen, nail polish, or similar marker Required Additional Procedures Steps in these procedures are required to complete this process: Air Bag Warning Light Reset (85.5 Onwards) Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Disconnect the Battery Locate the battery in the engine compartment (front of the vehicle). Using a 10 mm (3/8 inch) wrench, loosen and remove the negative (-) battery cable from the terminal. Secure the cable away from the battery to prevent accidental reconnection. (85.5 Onwards) Wait at least 30 minutes after disconnecting the battery to ensure the airbag system is fully discharged. Step 2: Remove the Steering Wheel Horn Pad or Airbag Assembly (Pre-85.5) For non-airbag models, firmly pull the steering wheel horn pad to remove it. It may require significant force but is designed to withstand pulling. If you have an aftermarket wheel (e.g., Momo) with a center horn button, gently pry around the button’s edge with a small flat-tip screwdriver to release it. (Pre-85.5) Disconnect the wire from the back of the horn button and set the pad aside. (85.5 Onwards) For airbag-equipped models, locate the two recessed Torx screws on the back of the steering wheel. Using a T30 Torx socket and ratchet, remove both screws. (85.5 Onwards) Carefully slide the airbag assembly off the front of the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical plug from the back of the airbag. Place the airbag face-up in a safe location to prevent damage. Step 3: Remove the Steering Wheel Using a 24 mm (15/16 inch) socket and ratchet, remove the steering wheel retaining nut and the washer behind it. Mark the steering wheel’s orientation relative to the steering column shaft splines using a paint pen, nail polish, or another marker to ensure proper alignment during reinstallation. Pull the steering wheel straight off the steering column shaft. Apply steady, even force to avoid damaging the splines. Step 4: Install the New or Existing Steering Wheel Align the steering wheel with the steering column shaft, matching the marks made during removal to ensure proper orientation. Slide the steering wheel onto the shaft until it’s fully seated. Install the washer and steering wheel retaining nut. Using a 24 mm (15/16 inch) socket and torque wrench, tighten the nut to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs). Step 5: Reattach the Horn Pad or Airbag Assembly (Pre-85.5) For non-airbag models, reconnect the wire to the back of the horn button pad. Press the pad firmly into place on the steering wheel until it clicks securely. (85.5 Onwards) For airbag-equipped models, reconnect the electrical plug to the back of the airbag assembly. Slide the airbag into the steering wheel, aligning it properly. (85.5 Onwards) Install the two T30 Torx screws on the back of the steering wheel using a T30 Torx socket and ratchet. Tighten until snug but do not overtighten. Step 6: Test the Airbag Warning Light (85.5 Onwards) (85.5 Onwards) Stand outside the vehicle for safety and reach in to turn the ignition to the “ON” position without starting the engine. (85.5 Onwards) Start the engine and observe the airbag warning light on the dashboard. If the light remains illuminated, follow the instructions at Air Bag Warning Light Reset to reset the warning light. Post Procedure Checklist Verify the steering wheel is securely fastened and does not wobble when turned. (Pre-85.5) Test the horn to ensure it functions properly. (85.5 Onwards) Confirm the airbag warning light is off after starting the vehicle. If illuminated, reset it using the Air Bag Warning Light Reset procedure. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to ensure smooth operation and proper alignment.
