Camshaft (Timing) Belt Installation

Overview

This procedure replaces the camshaft (timing) belt on your Porsche 944 S2’s 3.0L engine. The timing belt synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring the engine runs smoothly. Replacing it is crucial to prevent engine damage, especially on the S2 with its spring-tensioned system.

Tools Required

• Jack stands
• Floor jack
• Metric socket set
• Metric wrench set
• Porsche Timing Belt Tension Tool (P9201)

Parts Required

• Timing belt, 944 105 157 04 (specific to S2 3.0L)

Step-by-Step Procedure

NOTE: This procedure presupposes that your timing belt has already been removed and your car is prepped and ready for installation.

Step 1: Install Camshaft Belt Components

1. Install the rear timing cover if it was removed.
2. Install the water pump idler roller if removed. Tighten the retaining bolt to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
3. Install the crankshaft gear if removed, ensuring the lip faces the front of the car.
4. Install the camshaft sprocket if removed.
5. Install the cam belt tensioning roller onto your tensioner if removed (spring tensioner will be added later).

Step 2: Install the Camshaft Belt

6. Align the camshaft sprocket mark with the mark on the rear distributor housing.
7. Place the timing belt (944 105 157 04) on the crankshaft gear.
8. Route the belt around the camshaft sprocket, keeping it tight between the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Ensure neither moves from TDC.
9. Continue routing the belt around the water pump pulley and tensioning roller.
10. Install the spring tensioner now to assist with routing (recommended for easier installation).

Step 3: Verify Alignment and Final Assembly

13. Rotate the crankshaft two full turns and set it back to TDC for cylinder 1.
14. Check that the camshaft and flywheel marks align at TDC.
15. Install the front timing belt covers.
16. Install and tension the alternator and power steering belts.

18. Reconnect the battery.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify the camshaft belt tension is correct using the Porsche Timing Belt Tension Tool (P9201).
• Check that the camshaft and flywheel alignment marks match TDC for cylinder 1.
• Inspect for any loose bolts or components.
• Start the engine and listen for unusual noises (e.g., belt whine or misalignment).
