Electrical Headlight Operating Mechanism Lubrication Estimated reading: 2 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure lubricates the headlight operating mechanism on your Porsche 944 (16v engine) to keep it moving smoothly. Regular lubrication every 15,000 miles (24,140 km) prevents wear and ensures the headlights pop up and down without sticking—crucial for both functionality and that classic 944 look. Tools Required White lithium grease Parts cleaning brush (small) Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Remove the Headlight Motor Fuse Locate the central electric panel in your Porsche 944 (1985.5 and newer models, including the S2). Remove Fuse #2 to disable the headlight motor. This prevents accidental activation while you’re working. Step 2: Lubricate the Mechanism Find the headlight operating mechanism near the headlight assembly under the hood. Using a small parts cleaning brush, apply white lithium grease to the rotating joints of the mechanism. Locate the knob on top of the headlight motor. Turn the knob by hand to rotate the motor, working the grease into the joints as you move it. Step 3: Test and Finalize Rotate the headlight mechanism through several full up-and-down cycles by hand to spread the grease evenly and ensure smooth operation. Lower the headlights to the full down position using the knob. Reinstall Fuse #2 into the central electric panel. Post Procedure Checklist Check that the headlights move up and down smoothly when activated with the switch. Ensure no grease has dripped onto other components under the hood—wipe away any excess if needed. Confirm the fuse is securely seated and the headlight motor operates normally.
