A faulty sensor can lead to poor fuel economy, engine hesitation, or failed emissions tests. This guide covers testing and replacing the O2 sensor for 1983–1985.5 (Pre-85.5) and 1985.5–1988 (85.5 Onwards) models, ensuring your engine runs efficiently. Locate the O2 sensor connector plug at the back of the engine. For Pre-85.5 models, it’s a single-wire round plug; for 85.5 Onwards models, it’s a three-wire plug. Disconnect the O2 sensor plug and connect a voltmeter to the sensor’s signal wire (the single wire for Pre-85.5, or the signal wire in the three-wire connector for 85.5 Onwards). Run the engine at approximately 2500 rpm. Enrich the fuel mixture by introducing propane into the intake until the engine rpm drops by 200 rpm. Alternatively, disconnect the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator, ensuring to plug the line to prevent a vacuum leak. Check the voltmeter. If it rapidly rises above 0.9 VDC, the sensor correctly detects a rich mixture. If the reading is sluggish or stays below 0.8 VDC, replace the sensor. Secure the propane source or reattach the vacuum line. While maintaining 2500 rpm, disconnect a vacuum line from the intake to create a lean mixture. Check the voltmeter. If it rapidly drops below 0.2 VDC, the sensor correctly detects a lean mixture. If the reading is sluggish or stays above 0.2 VDC, replace the sensor. Step 2: Replace the Oxygen Sensor Locate and disconnect the O2 sensor connector plug at the back of the engine. Trace the wire to the O2 sensor, located in the exhaust system. Remove the old sensor using a 24mm (15/16 inch) open-end wrench or an O2 sensor socket. For universal sensor installation: Follow the instructions provided with the universal sensor to splice the factory connector plug onto the new sensor wires. Use crimp-type connectors, not solder, to ensure proper operation. Important: Do not use silicon-based chemicals (e.g., RTV sealants, anti-seize compounds) near the sensor, as they can contaminate it and cause failure. Install the new sensor and tighten it securely to the exhaust system. Reconnect the sensor’s connector plug. Post Procedure Checklist Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks around the new sensor. Drive the vehicle for 5 miles (8 km) to ensure the DME adjusts to the new sensor. Monitor fuel economy and engine performance for improvements. Verify the sensor connector is secure and not exposed to heat or debris.
