Checking Clutch Disc Wear – 2.5L NA

This procedure outlines how to check the clutch disc wear on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine, covering both pre-1985.5 and 1985.5 onwards models. Regular inspection is crucial to ensure the clutch operates effectively, especially under demanding conditions like track use. Checking the clutch disc wear helps prevent unexpected failures and maintains optimal performance. For vehicles driven hard or used in motorsports, inspections should occur every 7,500 miles (12,070 km) or at the end of each race season. For regular use, check every 15,000 miles (24,140 km).

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

1. Park the vehicle on a flat, stable surface.
2. Using a floor jack, lift the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands. Ensure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.

Step 2: Access the Inspection Port

3. Locate the round inspection port (approximately 25mm (1 inch) in diameter) on the left-hand side of the clutch housing, near the clutch slave cylinder.

For Pre-85.5 models:
The inspection port is directly accessible without obstructions from a crossover pipe.

For 85.5 Onwards models:

4. Remove the rubber dust cover from the inspection port, if present. Note that the cover is often missing on many Porsche 944 vehicles. If missing, proceed to the next step. If replacing, use part number 999 703 139 40.

Step 3: Measure Clutch Disc Wear

5. Using a ruler or measuring device, measure the distance from the front edge of the inspection port (closest to the front of the vehicle) to the edge of the clutch slave cylinder piston.
6. Record the measurement in millimeters.

Step 4: Evaluate Clutch Condition

7. Compare the measured distance to the following specifications:

A new clutch disc typically measures approximately 18mm.
If the measured distance is 34mm or greater, the clutch disc is worn and should be replaced. Use clutch disc part number 944 116 911 00.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify that the rubber dust cover (if installed) is securely in place or replaced with part number 999 703 139 40.
