Fuel and Ignition Ignition Switch Replacement – 2.5L NA Estimated reading: 5 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure outlines the steps to replace the ignition switch on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine configuration, covering both pre-1985.5 (1983–1985.5) and 1985.5 onwards (1986–1988) models. The ignition switch is critical for starting the vehicle and powering electrical systems. A faulty switch can cause starting issues or electrical failures. This guide is tailored for DIY enthusiasts with mechanical experience, ensuring clarity and precision. Pink and blue text represent links to additional resources, tools, parts, and partner websites. Tools Required Phillips screwdriver #1 tip Metric Allen wrench set Flat screwdriver set (various sizes) Small pry-bar Hammer Brass drift or large deep socket (approximately 25mm (1 inch)) Small scribe or small cold chisel Steering wheel puller (optional) Shop light Parts Required Ignition switch, 944 610 911 00 (Pre-85.5) Ignition switch, 944 610 912 00 (85.5 Onwards) Required Additional Procedures Steps in these procedures are required to complete this process: Steering Wheel Removal and Installation Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Ensure the front wheels are straight and the steering wheel is centered. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical issues during the procedure. Step 2: Remove the Steering Wheel Follow this link to ensure this step – Steering Wheel Removal and Installation – is followed accurately for your specific model. Note: This guide assumes a stock steering wheel for your Porsche 944 8-valve engine. If you have an aftermarket wheel (e.g., Dino Wheel), refer to your wheel’s documentation. For Pre-85.5 models: Remove the horn pad to access the center nut. Use a flat screwdriver to gently pry it off. Mark the steering wheel and shaft with a small scribe or cold chisel to ensure proper alignment during reassembly. Remove the center nut using a 24mm (15/16 inch) socket. A steering wheel puller may be required to remove the wheel. For 85.5 Onwards models: Remove the horn pad or center emblem to access the center nut. Refer to the Steering Wheel Removal and Installation procedure for specific instructions. Mark the steering wheel and shaft for reassembly alignment. Remove the center nut using a 24mm (15/16 inch) socket. Use a steering wheel puller if necessary. Disconnect the horn wires and carefully slide the steering wheel off the column. Step 3: Remove the Turn Signal and Wiper Stalk Assembly Remove the three flat-head screws on top of the stalk assembly using a Phillips #1 screwdriver. Remove the plastic housing around the stalks. It splits longitudinally and is secured by two screws from below (one short, one long). Use a Phillips #1 screwdriver to remove them. Carefully slide the stalk assembly forward, guiding the attached wires out from under the dashboard. Do not disconnect the wires unless necessary to avoid re-routing issues later. If the turn signal and wiper switches separate, reassemble them after removal. Step 4: Remove the Plastic Spacer Collar Gently pry the plastic spacer collar around the steering column using a flat screwdriver. Start at the slots around the bottom. Once loosened, use a small pry-bar to carefully work the collar off. Avoid prying on the three small screw holes, as they can break easily. Step 5: Remove the Ignition Switch Assembly Locate the Allen head bolt on the left side of the steering column, accessible through a hole in the bottom of the dashboard. Remove it using a 5mm Allen wrench. Slide the ignition switch assembly out of the column. Be mindful of the attached wires. Unplug the wire connector from the back of the ignition switch. Step 6: Replace the Ignition Switch Flip the ignition switch assembly over to access the small Phillips screw on the back. Remove it using a Phillips #1 screwdriver. Slide the old ignition switch out of the assembly. Apply a small amount of grease to the tang of the new ignition switch (944 610 911 00 for Pre-85.5 or 944 610 912 00 for 85.5 Onwards) where it engages the lock to reduce wear. Insert the new switch into the assembly and secure it with the Phillips screw. Step 7: Reassemble the Components Reconnect the wire connector to the back of the ignition switch. Slide the ignition switch assembly back into the steering column and secure it with the 5mm Allen head bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (7.4 ft-lbs). Pack the steering column bearings with fresh grease before reinstalling the plastic spacer collar. Lightly sand or file any burrs on the plastic spacer collar. Apply a thin layer of grease to the inner surface to ease installation. Press the collar into place using a large deep socket (approximately 25mm (1 inch)) and a hammer, tapping gently and alternating sides to avoid damage. Reinstall the stalk assembly, guiding the wires back through the dashboard. Secure the plastic housing with the two screws (noting their different lengths). Tighten the three flat-head screws on top of the stalk assembly to 5 Nm (3.7 ft-lbs). Reinstall the steering wheel, aligning the marks made earlier. Tighten the center nut to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs). Reconnect the horn wires and follow the Steering Wheel Removal and Installation procedure for final steps. Step 8: Finalize and Test Reconnect the battery. Test the ignition switch by turning the key to ensure the vehicle starts and all electrical systems function correctly. Post Procedure Checklist Verify the vehicle starts reliably with the new ignition switch. Check that the horn, turn signals, and wiper stalks function correctly. Ensure the steering wheel is centered and aligned with the front wheels. Inspect for any loose screws or components around the steering column. Confirm no dashboard warning lights are illuminated after starting the vehicle.
