Hood Insulation – Removal – 2.5L NA

Overview

This procedure guides you through removing the hood insulation on a Porsche 944 (8-valve engine configuration) for 1983–1985.5 (pre-85.5) and 1985.5–1988 (85.5 onwards) models. Over time, aging hood insulation can flake off, creating a mess in the engine compartment that’s difficult to clean. Removing it prevents debris buildup, and you can choose to replace it or leave it off, as Porsche omitted hood insulation on some later models (85.5 onwards). This guide is tailored for DIY enthusiasts with mechanical experience, ensuring a clean and safe removal process without damaging the hood’s paint.

Tools Required

• Soft cloth
• Plastic scraper
• 3M Woodgrain and Trim Remover
• Soft blanket, large rug, or large soft piece of carpet
• 10mm (3/8 inch) wrench or socket (for hood hinge bolts)
• Professional hood prop or broomstick cut to length

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Remove the Hood

1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface and open the hood.
2. Disconnect the windshield washer nozzle hoses from the hood. For pre-85.5 models, these are typically located near the center of the hood’s underside. For 85.5 onwards models, check for the same configuration, as layouts are similar.
3. (Pre-85.5) Disconnect the wires for the washer nozzle heaters, if equipped, located near the washer nozzles.
4. (85.5 Onwards) Note that some later models may not have washer nozzle heaters; skip this step if not present.
5. Disconnect the hood shocks by unclipping them from their mounting points on the hood and body. Have an assistant hold the hood to prevent it from falling.
6. Prop the hood securely using a professional hood prop or a broomstick cut to the appropriate length to hold the hood open.
7. Using a 10mm (3/8 inch) wrench or socket, loosen and remove the four hood hinge bolts (two per side) that attach the hood to the hinges. Mark the hinge positions with a marker to aid reinstallation.
8. With an assistant, carefully lift the hood off the vehicle and place it upside down on a soft blanket, rug, or carpet to protect the paint.

Step 2: Remove the Old Hood Insulation

9. Using your hands or a plastic scraper, gently remove as much of the old hood insulation as possible. Work carefully to avoid scratching the hood’s underside. Most of the insulation should come off, leaving primarily the adhesive behind.

Step 3: Remove the Adhesive

10. Apply 3M Woodgrain and Trim Remover to the remaining adhesive on the hood’s underside. Follow the product instructions and let it sit for approximately 5 minutes to soften the adhesive.
11. Using a soft cloth, gently rub away the softened adhesive. Do not use a scraper at this stage, as the trim remover may soften the paint, and scraping could damage it.
12. Repeat the application of 3M Woodgrain and Trim Remover and cloth wiping as needed until all adhesive is removed.

Step 4: Clean and Finish

13. Wash the underside of the hood thoroughly with soap and water to remove any remaining adhesive residue or trim remover.
14. Dry the area completely with a clean, soft cloth.
15. Apply a coat of automotive wax to the underside of the hood to protect the surface and restore shine.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Inspect the hood’s underside to ensure all insulation and adhesive are fully removed.
• Check for any paint damage or scratches caused during the process.
• Verify that the hood hinges and bolts are ready for reinstallation (bolts should be clean and undamaged).
• Confirm that the washer nozzle hoses and heater wires (if applicable) are intact and ready for reconnection.
