Tools Required Phillips Head Screwdriver 13mm (1/2 inch) open end wrench Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Disconnect the Battery Use a 13mm (1/2 inch) open end wrench to loosen and remove the negative battery lead (terminal clamp, 944 611 011 00) from the battery. This ensures safety by preventing electrical shorts during the procedure. Step 2: Locate and Access the DME Control Unit Locate the DME control unit based on your model year: For Pre-85.5 models: • The DME unit is located underneath the dashboard, to the left of the steering column. For 85.5 Onwards models: • Pull back the carpet at the front of the passenger footwell. • Remove the four screws securing the wooden panel in the footwell using a Phillips head screwdriver and set the panel aside to expose the DME control unit. Step 3: Remove the DME Control Unit Disconnect the wiring harness from the DME control unit (944 618 111 00 for Pre-85.5, 944 618 111 02 for 85.5 Onwards): • Release the clip on the cable end of the wiring harness plug. • Swing the connector up and out of the DME control unit plug to disconnect it. Remove the DME control unit: For Pre-85.5 models: • Remove the two mounting bolts securing the DME control unit using a Phillips head screwdriver, then carefully remove the unit from under the dashboard. For 85.5 Onwards models: • Remove the two screws and two plugs securing the DME control unit’s mounting bracket using a Phillips head screwdriver. • Carefully remove the DME control unit from the passenger footwell. Post Procedure Checklist Verify that the DME control unit has been safely removed and stored to prevent damage. Ensure the wiring harness connector is undamaged and the clip is intact. Check that the battery negative lead remains disconnected until further procedures are completed. For 85.5 Onwards models, confirm the wooden panel and carpet are set aside properly for reinstallation.
