Overview

This procedure outlines the steps to install a new or refurbished oil pump on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine, covering pre-1985.5 (1983–1985) and 1985.5 onwards (1986–1988) variants. Proper installation ensures reliable oil circulation, critical for engine performance and longevity. The process assumes the oil pump has been removed and the engine is set to Top Dead Center (TDC) on cylinder 1.

Tools Required

• Metric Wrench Set (10mm to 17mm, 3/8 inch to 11/16 inch)
• Metric Socket Set (10mm to 17mm, 3/8 inch to 11/16 inch)
• Torque Wrench (6–50 Nm, 4–37 ft-lbs)
• Ramps or Jack Stands and Floor Jack

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare Oil Pump Components

1. Inspect the oil pump drive gear for a ridge or wear that could prevent proper sealing with the crankshaft oil seal. If a ridge or significant wear is present, replace the drive gear with the appropriate part:

For Pre-85.5 models:
Use sleeve/drive gear 944 107 161 01.

For 85.5 Onwards models:
Use sleeve/drive gear 944 107 161 02.

2. If reusing the oil pump, disassemble it for inspection and apply Loctite 574 sealant to the outer edge of the pump insert during reassembly to ensure a proper seal.

Step 2: Install New Oil Pump Seal and Drive Gear

3. Install a new main seal into the oil pump housing, ensuring it is fully seated:

For Pre-85.5 models:
Use main seal (38 x 55 x 7) 999 113 268 40.

For 85.5 Onwards models:
Use main seal (38 x 52 x 7) 944 107 014 11.

4. Install the oil pump drive gear onto the pump, ensuring proper alignment.

Step 3: Install Oil Pump

5. Apply Loctite 574 sealant to the sealing surfaces of the oil pump to ensure a good seal with the engine block.
6. Slide the oil pump onto the end of the crankshaft, aligning it properly.
7. Install the oil pump mounting bolts and torque them to the specified values:

For M6 bolts, use a 10mm wrench or socket and torque to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs).
For the M10 bolt, use a 17mm wrench or socket and torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Inspect the crankshaft for wear or damage where the oil pump seals, as this can affect sealing performance (recommended by Pelican Parts).

Step 4: Reinstall Crankshaft Components

8. Install the crankshaft gear Woodruff key into the recess on the crankshaft using a small flathead screwdriver or pliers to ensure it is secure.

Step 5: Reinstall Timing and Balance Shaft Belts

9. Follow this link to ensure this step – Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Installation – is completed accurately to install the timing belt, balance shaft belt, and all rollers. Adjust the timing belt tension according to the Porsche 944 Workshop Manual.

Step 6: Reinstall Oil Pan

10. If the oil pan was fully removed, follow this link to ensure this step – Oil Pan Gasket Replacement – is completed accurately to reinstall the oil pan.
11. If the oil pan was only loosened, tighten the oil pan retaining bolts using a 10mm wrench or socket to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) to secure it.

Step 7: Reinstall Air Filter Assembly

Step 8: Final Reassembly and Checks

13. Reconnect the positive battery lead.
14. Reinstall the underbody protection panel using a 10mm wrench or socket for the bolts.
15. Lower the car from the ramps or jack stands.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify the engine is still set to TDC on cylinder 1.
• Check that the timing belt and balance shaft belt are properly tensioned per the Porsche 944 Workshop Manual.
• Inspect for oil leaks around the oil pump and oil pan after starting the engine.
• Ensure all tools and debris are removed from the engine bay and under the vehicle.
• Confirm the underbody protection panel is securely fastened.
