Engine Flywheel Lock Installation – 2.5L NA Estimated reading: 3 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure outlines the steps to install a flywheel lock on all the Porsche 944 with an 8-valve engine configuration. The flywheel lock is used to secure the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) during maintenance tasks, such as timing belt replacement, to prevent the crankshaft from rotating. This guide is tailored for both pre-1985.5 (83-85.5) and 1985.5 onwards (86-88) models, with distinctions noted where applicable. Disconnect the positive battery lead to prevent electrical hazards during the procedure. Step 2: Set Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) Follow this link to ensure this step – Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1 – of the process is followed accurately to position the engine at TDC on cylinder #1. Step 3: Remove the Starter Heat Shield Using an 8mm (5/16 inch) socket and ratchet, remove the starter heat shield mounting nut located on the back of the starter. Using a 17mm (11/16 inch) combination wrench, loosen the starter heat shield mounting bolts on the clutch housing. There is no need to remove these bolts completely. Remove the heat shield from the vehicle. Step 4: Remove the Starter Using a 19mm (3/4 inch) socket or combination wrench, remove the starter mounting bolts from the clutch housing. Carefully move the starter to one side and secure it using shock cords or bailing wire to keep it out of the way. Step 5: Install the Flywheel Lock Position the flywheel lock (P9206) so that its teeth engage with the teeth on the flywheel. Bolt the flywheel lock to the clutch housing using the starter mounting bolts:For Pre-85.5 models:– Use one starter mounting bolt with a nut (944 606 123 00) to secure one side, as the bolt may not thread directly into the housing. For 85.5 Onwards models:– Use one starter mounting bolt with a nut (944 606 123 00) for one side, and thread the other bolt directly into the clutch housing. Tighten the bolts to secure the flywheel lock, ensuring it is firmly in place. Torque to approximately 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs) as per Porsche 944 Workshop Manual recommendations. Step 6: Verify Engine Position Confirm that the engine remains at TDC on cylinder #1 by checking the alignment marks as described in the Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1 procedure. Post Procedure Checklist Verify that the flywheel lock teeth are properly engaged with the flywheel and the lock is securely bolted to the clutch housing. Ensure the engine is still at TDC on cylinder #1 by checking alignment marks. Check that the starter is securely hung to the side and not interfering with the flywheel lock. Inspect the work area for any loose tools or debris before proceeding with other maintenance tasks.
