Body Hood Strut Replacement Estimated reading: 3 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure replaces the hood struts on your Porsche 944 S / S2 (16v engine), which are essential for keeping the hood open safely and securely. Worn-out struts can fail to hold the hood up, making this a straightforward yet important fix. Having an assistant can make the job easier and safer. Tools Required Needle nose pliers Flat tip screwdriver Hood prop (e.g., a broomstick cut to about 4 feet (1.2 meters)) Parts Required Hood Strut, 944 511 351 01 (2 required for both sides) Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the Hood Raise the hood fully and secure it with a hood prop. A broomstick cut to about 4 feet (1.2 meters) works well to hold it open safely. Work on one strut at a time to keep the hood stable while you replace each side. Step 2: Remove the Old Strut Use needle nose pliers to remove the spring clips from the hood strut retaining pins. If the clips are stubborn, gently pry them off with a flat tip screwdriver. While supporting the hood with one hand (or with your assistant’s help), pull out the retaining pins to release the old strut from its mounting points. Remove the old strut from the car and set it aside. Step 3: Install the New Strut Take the new hood strut (944 511 351 01) and position it between the hood and the car’s mounting points. If it comes compressed with a strap, keep the strap on until it’s aligned and ready to install. Insert the retaining pins to secure the new strut in place. You may need to raise the hood slightly higher than its normal open position to fit the strut—ask your assistant to help if needed. Be careful not to let the hood’s rear edge press against the windshield, as this could crack it. Once the strut is pinned, install the spring clips onto the retaining pins to lock them in place. If the strut was strapped, carefully cut and remove the strap now. Step 4: Repeat for the Other Side Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the strut on the opposite side of the hood, ensuring both are securely installed. Post Procedure Checklist Check that both struts hold the hood open firmly without sagging. Ensure all retaining pins and spring clips are fully seated and secure. Verify the hood opens and closes smoothly without contacting the windshield.
