Engine Oil Pump Removal and Installation Estimated reading: 4 minutes Contributors Overview This guide walks you through removing and installing the oil pump on your Porsche 944 S / S2 with the 16v engine. The oil pump keeps your engine lubricated, so maintaining it is critical for performance and longevity. While it’s best to remove the oil pan fully for this job, you can also lower it slightly if you’re careful with sealing during installation. Pink and blue text represents links to additional resources, tools, parts, and partner websites. Tools Required Metric wrench set (sizes like 10mm (3/8 inch), 13mm, etc., depending on bolts) Metric socket set (sizes like 10mm (3/8 inch), 13mm, etc., depending on bolts) Ramps OR jack stands and floor jack Loctite 574 sealant Parts Required Oil pump – 944 107 014 11 Main seal (38 x 52 x 7) – 944 107 014 11 Sleeve / drive gear – 944 107 161 02 Sleeve seal (28 x 2.58) – 900 174 049 40 Required Additional Procedures Steps in these procedures are required to complete this process: Oil Pan Gasket Replacement Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1 Flywheel Lock Installation Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Removal Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Installation Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Tension – Checking and Adjusting Air Filter Housing and Air Flow Sensor – Removal and Installation Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Lift your Porsche 944 S / S2 using ramps or a floor jack with jack stands to safely access the underside. Ensure it’s secure before working. Disconnect the positive battery lead to avoid electrical issues during the procedure. Step 2: Set the Engine Position Follow this link to ensure this step – Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1 – of the process is followed accurately. This aligns the engine correctly for timing belt removal. Follow this link to ensure this step – Flywheel Lock Installation – of the process is followed accurately. This locks the crankshaft in place. Step 3: Remove Timing Components Follow this link to ensure this step – Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Removal – of the process is followed accurately. Remove the balance shaft belt, timing belt, rollers, balance shaft sprockets, crankshaft gear, and rear timing cover. Take out the Woodruff key from the crankshaft slot using a small pick or pliers. Step 4: Access the Oil Pump If removing the oil pan fully, follow this link to ensure this step – Oil Pan Gasket Replacement – of the process is followed accurately. Otherwise, loosen the oil pan bolts enough to lower the front slightly for pump access. Remove the oil pump retaining bolts (two M6 and one M10) using a 10mm (3/8 inch) wrench for the M6 bolts and a 17mm wrench for the M10 bolt. Slide the oil pump off the crankshaft. Step 5: Disassemble and Inspect the Oil Pump Pull the drive gear off the oil pump. Check it for a ridge or wear that could affect sealing with the crankshaft seal. Replace it with 944 107 161 02 if worn. Remove the old main seal from the oil pump housing using a seal puller or flathead screwdriver. If inspecting the pump internals, disassemble it. When reassembling, apply Loctite 574 sealant around the outer edge of the pump insert for a tight seal. Step 6: Reassemble the Oil Pump Press a new main seal (944 107 014 11) into the oil pump housing. Install the drive gear (944 107 161 02) onto the pump. Apply Loctite 574 sealant to the oil pump’s sealing surfaces that contact the engine block. Step 7: Install the Oil Pump Slide the oil pump onto the crankshaft. Secure it with the retaining bolts. Tighten the M6 bolts to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs) using a 10mm (3/8 inch) wrench and the M10 bolt to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs) using a 17mm wrench. Insert the Woodruff key back into the crankshaft slot. Step 8: Reinstall Timing Components Follow this link to ensure this step – Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Installation – of the process is followed accurately. Install the timing belt, balance shaft belt, and rollers. Follow this link to ensure this step – Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Tension – Checking and Adjusting – of the process is followed accurately to tension the belts properly. Step 9: Final Reassembly Follow this link to ensure this step – Air Filter Housing and Air Flow Sensor – Removal and Installation – of the process is followed accurately to reinstall the air filter assembly. Reconnect the positive battery lead. If equipped, reinstall the skid pan under the car. Lower the car from the ramps or jack stands. Post Procedure Checklist Check for oil leaks around the oil pump and oil pan after starting the engine. Verify the timing belts are tensioned correctly and the engine runs smoothly. Ensure no tools or parts are left under the car.
