Alarm System – Bypassing

Overview

This procedure explains how to bypass the alarm system on a Porsche 944 with a 16v engine. If your car won’t start or run properly, a faulty alarm module might be the cause. Since testing the module is tricky, bypassing it by disconnecting it and adding jumpers is a simple way to check if it’s the problem. This guide is specific to the late-model 944, where the alarm module is located in the passenger footwell.

Tools Required

• Two wire jumpers with spade connectors

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Locate the Alarm Module

1. Find the alarm module in your Porsche 944. It’s a black box about the size of a pack of cigarettes, located behind the kick panel in the passenger’s footwell, above the DME computer.

Step 2: Disconnect the Alarm Module

2. Locate the electrical plug connected to the alarm module.
3. Carefully disconnect the plug from the module by pulling it straight out.

Step 3: Install the Jumpers

4. Take one wire jumper with spade connectors and connect it between Pin 1 (black/white wire) and Pin 4 (green wire) on the large electrical plug.
5. Take the second wire jumper and connect it between Pin 7 (yellow/red wire) and Pin 8 (blue wire) on the same large plug.
6. Ensure both jumpers are securely attached to the correct pins.

Step 4: Test the Bypass

7. Attempt to start the vehicle by turning the key in the ignition.
8. Listen for the engine to crank and start. If it starts and runs, the alarm module was likely causing the issue.
9. If the car still doesn’t start (e.g., for a “no start” troubleshooting scenario), the alarm module is not the problem, and you’ll need to investigate other causes.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check that the jumpers are firmly connected and not loose.
• Verify the car starts and runs smoothly with the alarm bypassed.
• Ensure no warning lights related to the alarm system appear on the dashboard.
