DME Control Unit Installation

Overview

This procedure outlines the installation of the DME (Digital Motor Electronics) control unit for a Porsche 944 equipped with a 16v engine. The DME unit controls fuel injection and ignition timing, critical for engine performance in the 944. Proper installation ensures the system functions reliably.

Tools Required

Step-by-Step Installation Procedure

Step 1: Install the DME Control Unit

1. Position the replacement or repaired DME control unit in the passenger footwell of the Porsche 944 where the original unit was mounted.
2. Insert the hooked end of the wiring harness connector (opposite the wiring harness) into the slot on the DME control unit plug.
3. Swing the connector downward into the plug until the retaining clip latches securely.
4. Align the DME control unit’s mounting bracket with its original mounting points.
5. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the two mounting bracket screws securely.

Step 2: Reassemble the Footwell

6. Place the wooden panel back over the DME control unit in the passenger footwell of the Porsche 944.
7. Secure the panel with the four Phillips head screws, tightening them evenly with a Phillips head screwdriver.
8. Push the carpet back into its original position over the panel.

Step 3: Reconnect the Battery

9. Return to the engine compartment of the Porsche 944 and reconnect the negative battery lead to the terminal.
10. Use a 13mm (1/2 inch) open-end wrench to tighten the nut on the negative terminal to 10 Nm (7.4 ft-lbs).

Post Procedure Checklist

• Turn the ignition key to the “on” position and check that the engine control system powers up (e.g., dashboard lights illuminate).
• Start the 3.0L engine of the Porsche 944 S2 and listen for smooth idling to confirm the DME unit is functioning.
• Inspect the passenger footwell to ensure the carpet and panel are secure with no loose screws.
