Engine Engine Filter Change – 2.5L NA Estimated reading: 3 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure outlines how to change the engine oil filter on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine, excluding the engine oil change. Regular oil filter replacement is essential for maintaining engine cleanliness and performance by removing contaminants from the oil. This guide is tailored for pre-1985.5 (1983–1985.5) and 1985.5 onwards (1986–1988) models, with model-specific distinctions clearly marked where applicable. Pink and blue text represent links to additional resources, tools, parts, and partner websites. Tools Required Type J oil filter wrench Jack stands and floor jack or ramps Drain pan Catch rags Parts Required Oil filter: 944 107 201 90 (Porsche OEM) or Mahle OC 142 (Note: Mahle OC 75 is a taller alternative) Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil, allowing it to flow better and reduce the viscosity for easier filter removal. Raise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack and secure it on jack stands or place it on ramps for safe access to the undercarriage. Step 2: Remove the Rear Skid Pan (If Present) Check if your Porsche 944 has a rear skid pan covering the oil pan area. Most 944s no longer have this, but if present, it must be removed to access the oil filter. For Pre-85.5 models: Use a 13mm socket to remove the bolts securing the rear skid pan, then carefully lower it. For 85.5 Onwards models: Use a 13mm socket to remove the bolts securing the rear skid pan, then carefully lower it. Note that later models may have slightly different bolt patterns, so ensure all bolts are removed. Step 3: Remove the Oil Filter Place a drain pan under the oil filter area to catch any dripping oil. Place catch rags around and below the oil filter to minimize mess. Using a Type J oil filter wrench, loosen and remove the oil filter (944 107 201 90 or Mahle OC 142). Optional: To reduce mess, you may punch a hole in the top-center of the filter before removal to help drain oil. Note that this may not always reduce mess and could create a larger spill if not done carefully. Step 4: Install the New Oil Filter Apply a thin layer of new engine oil to the seal ring of the new oil filter (944 107 201 90 or Mahle OC 142) to prevent tearing and ease future removal. Install the new oil filter by hand, tightening it until snug. Do not use a filter wrench to tighten, and avoid turning more than 1/4 turn past hand-tight to prevent over-tightening. Step 5: Lower the Vehicle If using jack stands, carefully lower the vehicle to level ground. If using ramps, drive the vehicle off the ramps. Post Procedure Checklist Ensure the new oil filter is hand-tight and not leaking. Confirm all tools and rags are removed from the engine compartment and undercarriage. Verify that any spilled oil is cleaned up and disposed of properly at an approved facility.
