Water Pump Replacement

Overview

This procedure guides you through replacing the water pump on your Porsche 944 S2 with its 3.0L engine. The water pump keeps the engine cool by circulating coolant, and replacing it ensures your car runs smoothly without overheating. This guide focuses on the newer-style water pump required for all 944 S2 models, and includes a timing belt guard rail and a larger idler roller.

Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Prepare the Car

1. Lift the car using a floor jack and secure it on jack stands or ramps.
2. Disconnect the positive battery lead to ensure safety while working.

2. Set Engine Position

3. Follow this link to ensure this step – Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1 – of the process is followed accurately. This aligns the engine correctly.
4. Follow this link to ensure this step – Flywheel Lock Installation – of the process is followed accurately. Use the Flywheel Lock (P9206) to secure the engine.

3. Remove Belts and Components

5. Follow this link to ensure this step – Balance Shaft Belt Removal – of the process is followed accurately. This removes the balance shaft belt, timing belt, rollers, balance shaft sprockets, crankshaft gear, and rear timing cover.

4. Remove the Old Water Pump

7. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the water pump.
8. Loosen the water pump retaining bolts and nuts using a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and wrench, then remove the old water pump.
9. Tip: Check the crankshaft and balance shaft oil seals now—they’re easier to replace while everything’s apart.

5. Prepare the New Water Pump

10. Install the new thermostat (944 106 019 00) onto the new water pump (951 106 021 10) using the snap ring (900 042 025 01) from the old pump. Add the spacer (900 234 160 00) and new O-ring (944 106 929 08) since the S2 uses the newer-style pump with a 7mm snap ring groove.

6. Install the New Water Pump

12. Place the new water pump with its gasket (944 106 132 04) onto the engine block.
13. Tighten the water pump nuts and bolts to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs) using a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and wrench. Avoid Loctite on the bolts to prevent stripping during future removals—use it only on the nuts if desired.

7. Reassemble Components

Install the timing belt, balance shaft belt, guard rail (944 105 213 01) with lock nuts (999 084 092 02), and 46.2 mm roller (944 105 241 03). Tension the belts using the next procedure.

8. Finalize the Installation

17. Reconnect the positive battery lead.

19. Reinstall the skid pan if equipped.
20. Lower the car off the jack stands or ramps.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check for coolant leaks around the water pump and hoses.
• Start the engine and let it warm up—watch the temperature gauge to ensure it stays normal.
• Inspect the timing belt guard rail and roller for proper alignment.
• Verify the belts are tensioned correctly (no slack or excessive noise).
