Bumper Cover Removal

Overview

This procedure outlines how to remove the front bumper cover on all Porsche 944 variants with a 16-valve engine. Removing the bumper cover is necessary for tasks like accessing the front suspension, radiator, or performing bodywork. It’s a straightforward process for DIY enthusiasts with basic mechanical skills, ensuring you can safely detach the bumper without damaging components.

Tools Required

• Phillips Head Screwdriver
• Metric Socket Set (including a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket)
• Ratchet (compatible with 10mm (3/8 inch) socket)
• Floor Jack
• Jack Stands (pair)

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Raise the Vehicle

1. Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Porsche 944 S / S2 by placing it under the designated front jacking point (consult your owner’s manual for exact location).
2. Secure the vehicle by placing jack stands under the front chassis support points.
3. Lower the floor jack until the car rests safely on the jack stands, ensuring it’s stable and at least 12 inches (0.3 meters) off the ground for working clearance.

Step 2: Remove the Belly Pan

4. Locate the belly pan (undertray) beneath the front of the vehicle, which protects the engine bay.
5. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws securing the belly pan to the chassis.
6. Carefully lower the belly pan and set it aside.

Step 3: Remove the Trim Panel

7. Find the trim panel attached to the bottom edge of the bumper cover.
8. Unscrew the Phillips head screws holding the trim panel in place.
9. Remove the trim panel and store it safely.

Step 4: Disconnect Turn Signals and Fog Lights

10. Locate the turn signal assemblies on both sides of the bumper cover.
11. Twist and pull the turn signal bulbs from their sockets, or remove any retaining screws if applicable, then set them aside.
12. Find the fog lights integrated into the bumper cover.
13. Disconnect the fog light wiring connectors by pressing the release tabs and pulling gently, then remove any screws securing the fog lights (if present) and take them out.

Step 5: Remove Bumper Cover Bolts

14. Using a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and ratchet, locate and remove the bolts on the left and right sides of the bumper cover where it attaches to the front fenders (one bolt per side).
15. Look up between the bumper cover and the A/C condenser to find two additional bolts near the center of the bumper cover.
16. Remove these two center bolts using the 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and ratchet.

Step 6: Slide Off the Bumper Cover

17. Gently pull the bumper cover forward, sliding it off the front of the Porsche 944.
18. Ensure no wiring or clips remain attached as you remove it, and set the bumper cover aside carefully to avoid scratches.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check that all bolts, screws, and components removed are accounted for and stored safely.
• Inspect the bumper cover for any damage or cracks that may need repair before reinstallation.
• Verify that the front fenders and A/C condenser area are free of debris or obstructions.
