Oil Pan Removal – 2.5L NA

This procedure outlines the steps to remove the oil pan on all the Porsche 944 with an 8-valve engine configuration, covering both pre-1985.5 (1983–1985.5) and 1985.5 onwards (1985.5–1988) variants. Removing the oil pan is necessary for tasks such as replacing the oil pan gasket, inspecting the oil pickup tube, or accessing internal engine components. Tools Required

• 13mm (1/2 inch) socket
• 10mm (3/8 inch) socket
• Ratchet wrench
• Torque wrench
• Flathead screwdriver
• Oil drain pan
• Jack and jack stands
• Scraper or gasket remover tool

Parts Required

• Oil pan gasket, 944 101 211 00
• Engine oil (5W-30, 6 quarts or 5.7 liters), 000 043 203 33
• Oil filter, 944 107 201 05

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Allow the engine to cool completely to avoid burns from hot oil.
3. Jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands, ensuring a working height of at least 18 inches (46 cm).

Step 2: Drain the Engine Oil

4. Place an oil drain pan under the oil drain plug, located on the bottom of the oil pan.
5. Using a 13mm socket, remove the oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain completely (approximately 10–15 minutes).
6. Inspect the drain plug washer for wear; replace if damaged with part 900 123 106 30.
7. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 3: Remove the Undertray (if equipped)

8. Locate the undertray beneath the engine, secured with bolts or screws.
9. Using a 10mm socket or flathead screwdriver, remove the fasteners securing the undertray.
10. Carefully lower and remove the undertray, setting it aside.

Step 4: Remove the Oil Pan Bolts

11. Locate the oil pan, attached to the bottom of the engine block with multiple bolts.

For Pre-85.5 models:

– Note that additional bolts may be present near the clutch housing. Use a 13mm socket to remove these.

For 85.5 Onwards models:

– The oil pan has a standardized bolt pattern; no additional clutch housing bolts are present.

12. Using a 13mm socket, loosen and remove all oil pan bolts, working in a crisscross pattern to prevent warping.
13. Keep the bolts in a labeled container to ensure proper reinstallation.

Step 5: Remove the Oil Pan

14. Gently tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet to break the gasket seal, if necessary.
15. Carefully lower the oil pan, ensuring no debris falls into the engine.
16. Inspect the oil pickup tube and screen for blockages; clean if necessary.
17. Use a scraper to remove the old gasket material from the oil pan and engine block mating surfaces.

Step 6: Prepare for Reinstallation

18. Ensure the oil pan and engine block surfaces are clean and free of old gasket material.
19. Verify that the new oil pan gasket, part 944 101 211 00, is the correct fit for your model year.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check that all bolts are accounted for and properly stored.
• Inspect the oil pan and pickup tube for damage or debris.
• Ensure the mating surfaces are clean and ready for gasket installation.
• Verify that the drain plug is securely tightened to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
• Confirm that no tools or debris are left under the vehicle.
