Step 1: Understand Maintenance Intervals

1. Review the maintenance schedule for your Porsche 944 (8-valve engine) to ensure timely camshaft belt inspections and replacements.

For Pre-85.5 models (1983–mid-1985):
After driving 2000 miles (3200 km), inspect and retension the camshaft belt.
For 85.5 Onwards models (mid-1985–1988):
After driving 15000 miles (24000 km), inspect the camshaft belt.
After driving 30000 miles (48000 km), inspect the belt. If the car is used infrequently, inspect after two years if 30000 miles (48000 km) is not reached, then annually.
After driving 45000 miles (72000 km), inspect the belt.
After driving 60000 miles (96000 km), replace the camshaft belt. Inspect rollers and replace if worn or damaged.

For Pre-85.5 models:
Replace the tensioner stud (944 102 216 01) at each camshaft belt change due to reported failures. Note that early 1983–1984 models may use a 106 mm stud, which is not available from Porsche. The standard 101 mm stud (944 102 216 01) is used from mid-1984 onwards.

For 85.5 Onwards models:
Spring tensioners are used, so the tensioner stud replacement is not required.
