Electrical Removing Late 944 (1985.5 and newer) Gauge Cluster Estimated reading: 4 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure guides you through removing the gauge cluster from a Porsche 944 (16v engine, 1989-1991). The gauge cluster, located in the dashboard, houses critical instruments like the speedometer and tachometer. Removing it is necessary for repairs, bulb replacement, or upgrades. This guide is tailored for DIY enthusiasts with mechanical experience, ensuring safe and accurate removal while protecting delicate components like the ribbon circuit board. Pink and blue text represent links to additional resources, tools, parts, and partner websites. Tools Required Phillips screwdriver (stubby recommended for tight spaces) 24 mm (15/16 inch) socket and ratchet Scribe, paint pen, or brightly colored nail polish Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Remove the Steering Wheel Pry off the horn button from the steering wheel center using a flathead screwdriver or your fingers. Disconnect the electrical spade connector on the back of the horn button. Using a 24 mm (15/16 inch) socket and ratchet, remove the steering wheel retaining nut and washer. Set them aside in a safe place. Mark the steering wheel’s orientation on the steering shaft using a scribe, paint pen, or nail polish. This ensures correct alignment during reassembly. Gently pull the steering wheel off the steering shaft. Removing the wheel provides better access to the gauge cluster. Step 2: Remove the Gauge Cluster Trim Screws Locate and remove the three Phillips head screws at the top of the plastic trim piece surrounding the gauge cluster. A stubby Phillips screwdriver is ideal for the tight space. Remove the two Phillips head screws at the bottom of the trim piece, located on either side of the steering column. Find the three Phillips head screws in the dashboard vents: one on the far right of the vent area and two near the gauge cluster. Remove all three screws. Step 3: Remove the Gauge Cluster Trim Lift the bottom edge of the trim piece behind the steering column to clear the column trim. You may need to pull down slightly on the top of the trim to free it from the dashboard. Slide the trim piece out of the dashboard. Move slowly to avoid damaging the vents or trim. Step 4: Remove the Gauge Cluster With the trim removed, locate the four Phillips head screws securing the gauge cluster to the dashboard. Remove these screws. Carefully slide the gauge cluster forward to access the electrical connectors on the back. Move slowly to avoid damaging the delicate ribbon circuit board on the cluster’s rear. Locate the three electrical connectors on the back of the cluster. Each has locking levers. Push the levers outward to release and disconnect each connector. Tilt the cluster slightly and slide one end out first, pushing up on the dashboard opening if needed for clearance. Remove the cluster slowly to protect the ribbon circuit board. Step 5: Reinstallation Reinstall the gauge cluster by reversing the removal steps. Ensure the ribbon circuit board is not pinched or damaged during installation. Reconnect the three electrical connectors, ensuring the locking levers click into place. Secure the cluster with the four Phillips head screws, tightening to 5 Nm (3.7 ft-lbs) for a snug fit without overtightening. Reinstall the trim piece, aligning it carefully, and secure it with the three top screws, two bottom screws, and three vent screws. Align the steering wheel using the marked orientation, then secure it with the retaining nut and washer, tightening to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs). Reconnect the horn button’s electrical connector and press the button back into place. Post Procedure Checklist Verify all screws are tightened to the specified torque values (5 Nm for cluster screws, 45 Nm for steering wheel nut). Check that the gauge cluster functions correctly (e.g., speedometer, tachometer, and warning lights operate as expected). Ensure the steering wheel is aligned properly and the horn button works. Inspect the trim piece and vents for proper fitment with no gaps or loose components. Confirm the ribbon circuit board is undamaged and all electrical connectors are secure.
