Fuel Filter Replacement

This procedure outlines the steps to replace the fuel filter on a Porsche 944 S / S2 with a 16v engine. The fuel filter ensures clean fuel reaches the engine, preventing contaminants from causing performance issues or damage. Regular replacement is critical for maintaining fuel system efficiency and engine health.

Tools Required

• Metric wrench set (including 17mm (11/16 inch) and 19mm (3/4 inch) wrenches)
• Hose clamp pliers or locking pliers (e.g., Vise-Grips)
• Catch rags

Parts Required

• Fuel filter, 928 110 147 06
• Protective material (e.g., shop cloth or rubber wrap) for fuel hose if using locking pliers

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare to Catch Escaping Fuel

1. Place catch rags under the fuel filter to absorb any fuel that may spill during removal. This prevents fuel from dripping onto the ground or vehicle components.

Step 2: Clamp the Fuel Hose

2. Use hose clamp pliers to pinch the fuel hose on the inlet side of the fuel filter, located near the rear axle on the Porsche 944 S / S2. This restricts fuel flow and minimizes spillage.

Note: If hose clamp pliers are unavailable, use standard locking pliers (e.g., Vise-Grips). Wrap the fuel hose with a protective material, such as a shop cloth or rubber wrap, to prevent damage from the pliers’ teeth.

Step 3: Disconnect the Fuel Lines

3. Use a 17mm (11/16 inch) wrench to unscrew the inlet fuel line from the fuel filter.
4. Use a 19mm (3/4 inch) wrench to unscrew the outlet fuel line from the fuel filter.

Note: Keep the catch rags in place to collect any residual fuel that escapes during disconnection.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Filter

5. Install the new fuel filter, 928 110 147 06. Ensure the arrow indicating the direction of fuel flow (toward the engine) is correctly oriented.

Note: For the Porsche 944 S / S2, the inlet side connects to the fuel line from the fuel tank, and the outlet side connects to the line leading to the engine.

Step 5: Reconnect and Tighten the Fuel Lines

6. Hand-tighten the inlet fuel line to the new fuel filter using a 17mm (11/16 inch) wrench, then tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
7. Hand-tighten the outlet fuel line using a 19mm (3/4 inch) wrench, then tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the Hose Clamp

8. Remove the hose clamp pliers (or locking pliers) from the inlet fuel hose to restore fuel flow.

Step 7: Start the Engine and Check for Leaks

9. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
10. Inspect the fuel filter and both fuel line connections for any signs of leaks.

Note: If leaks are detected, turn off the engine and re-tighten the fuel line nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check the fuel filter and fuel line connections for leaks while the engine is running.
• Ensure the fuel filter is installed with the correct flow direction (arrow pointing toward the engine).
• Verify that both fuel line nuts are tightened to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
• Dispose of catch rags and any spilled fuel safely in accordance with local regulations.
