Rear Hatch Strut Replacement – 2.5L NA

This procedure outlines how to replace the rear hatch struts on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine configuration. The struts support the rear hatch when open, and replacing them ensures proper operation and prevents issues with interior lights or the rear hatch defroster. Using the correct struts for your model year is critical to avoid electrical malfunctions.

Tools Required

• Telescoping hood prop or broom stick cut to appropriate length
• Needle nose pliers

Parts Required

• Hatch Strut, Right (Pre-85.5, 1983–1985.5): 944 512 348 00
• Hatch Strut, Left (Pre-85.5, 1983–1985.5): 944 512 349 00
• Hatch Strut, Right (85.5 Onwards, 1986–1988): 944 512 348 00
• Hatch Strut, Left (85.5 Onwards, 1986–1988): 944 512 349 00

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Rear Hatch

1. Open the rear hatch fully.
2. Secure the hatch in the open position using a telescoping hood prop or a broom stick cut to the appropriate length to hold it steady.

Step 2: Disconnect Electrical Wiring

3. Locate the electrical wires connected to the hatch strut.
4. Carefully disconnect the electrical wires from the strut, ensuring not to damage the connectors.

Step 3: Remove the Old Strut

5. (Pre-85.5) Grasp the body of the strut firmly and unscrew it counterclockwise until it separates from the pivot socket on both the body and hatch mounts.
6. (85.5 Onwards) Use needle nose pliers to pull back the spring clip on the socket at each end of the strut. Slide the strut off the mounts on the body and hatch.

Step 4: Install the New Strut

7. (Pre-85.5) Position the new strut (944 512 348 00 for right, 944 512 349 00 for left) and screw it clockwise into the pivot socket on both the body and hatch mounts until secure.
8. (85.5 Onwards) Align the new strut (944 512 348 00 for right, 944 512 349 00 for left) with the mounts. Push the strut onto the mounts until the spring clips snap into place.
9. Reconnect the electrical wires to the new strut, ensuring a firm connection.

Step 5: Repeat for the Second Strut

10. Repeat Steps 2–4 to replace the second strut, using the appropriate part for your model year.

Step 6: Remove the Prop and Test

11. Carefully remove the telescoping hood prop or broom stick.
12. Close and reopen the rear hatch to test the new struts, ensuring they hold the hatch securely.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify that the rear hatch opens and stays open without assistance.
• Check that the interior lights function correctly and do not stay on continuously.
• Confirm that the rear hatch defroster works properly.
• Ensure all electrical connections are secure and undamaged.
