Door Panel Removal and Installation

This procedure outlines how to remove and install the door panel on a Porsche 944 S / S2 (16v engine). Removing the door panel is necessary for accessing internal components like window regulators, door locks, or speakers. This guide ensures a safe and damage-free process for DIY enthusiasts.

Tools Required

• Phillips head screwdriver
• Small flat tip screwdriver or probe
• Door panel removal tool (optional, for prying plastic push plugs)

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Remove the Top Screws

1. Locate the two plastic covers near the top of the door panel (front and rear).
2. Use a small flat tip screwdriver or probe to pry off the plastic covers.
3. Remove the two Phillips head screws behind the covers using a Phillips head screwdriver.

Step 2: Remove the Speaker Grill

4. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws securing the speaker grill on the door panel.
5. Remove the speaker grill from the door panel.

Step 3: Remove the Window Crank Handle (If Applicable)

6. If your Porsche 944 S / S2 has manual windows, remove the window crank handle. This typically involves removing a retaining clip or screw (consult the Porsche 944 Workshop Manual for specific instructions).

Step 4: Remove the Door Pocket

7. Locate the Phillips head screws along the bottom edge and at the front of the door pocket.
8. Remove these screws using a Phillips head screwdriver.
9. Slide the door pocket downward to detach it from the door panel.

Step 5: Remove the Plastic Mounting Block

10. Locate the plastic mounting block at the front of the door panel, where the front door pocket screw was attached.
11. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw securing the plastic mounting block.
12. Remove the plastic mounting block.

Step 6: Remove the Door Handle Screw

13. Pull the interior door handle outward, as if opening the door.
14. Locate the Phillips head screw behind the handle.
15. Carefully remove the screw using a Phillips head screwdriver, taking care not to damage the handle.

Step 7: Remove the Armrest Screws

16. Locate the three Phillips head screws underneath the armrest, angled at approximately 45 degrees.
17. Remove these screws using a Phillips head screwdriver.

Step 8: Loosen the Plastic Push Plugs

18. Locate the plastic push plugs along the rear corner of the door panel, mounted to the back of the panel.
19. Lift the back edge of the door panel slightly.
20. Use a door panel removal tool (or a flat tip screwdriver) to carefully pry the push plugs loose from the door. Take care to avoid damaging the plugs or tearing them from the panel.

Step 9: Remove the Door Panel

21. Lift the door panel upward to disengage the tab on the back of the panel from the slot in the door.
22. Ensure the panel clears the lock button at the top of the door.
23. If your Porsche 944 S / S2 has electric windows, disconnect the electrical connector plug(s) for the window switch:

Use a small flat tip screwdriver to gently lift the plastic locking tabs on one side of the plug.
Pull back on that side to disengage the tabs.
Repeat for the other side, taking care not to break the tabs.

24. Remove the door panel from the vehicle.

Step 10: Install the Door Panel

25. If applicable, reconnect the electrical connector plug(s) for the window switch, ensuring the locking tabs engage securely.
26. Align the tab on the back of the door panel with the slot in the door.
27. Lower the panel into place, ensuring it fits over the lock button.
28. Reverse the removal steps (Steps 1–8) to secure the panel:

Reinstall the plastic push plugs by pressing them into place.
Reinstall the armrest screws, door handle screw, plastic mounting block, door pocket, window crank handle (if applicable), speaker grill, and top screws.

29. Tighten all screws securely, but do not overtighten to avoid stripping threads.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check that all screws and push plugs are securely fastened.
• Verify that the door panel is properly aligned and does not rattle when the door is closed.
• If equipped with electric windows, test the window switch to ensure it functions correctly.
• Inspect the door handle and lock button for smooth operation.
