Engine Cam / Valve Cover Gasket Replacement Estimated reading: 3 minutes Contributors Overview This guide provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the cam/valve cover seals on a Porsche 944 S2 (3.0L engine). This procedure is essential to prevent oil leaks and maintain engine cleanliness. Pink and blue text represent links to additional resources, tools, parts, and partner websites. Tools Required Phillips head screwdriver for spark plug wire brackets 5mm hex socket 10mm wrench or socket Torque wrench (capable of 7 ft-lbs / 10 Nm) Standard hand tools (ratchet, sockets, etc.) Gasket maker sealant Bolt-removal tool (optional, for seized bolts) Parts Required Cam cover gasket: 92810444709 4 x Spark plug well seals: 92810444308 13 x Cover bolt seals: 92810411502 Cam cover bolts, short: 92810411101 Cam cover bolts, long: 92810411701 New crush washers for bolts (included with new bolts or separately) Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the engine bay Disconnect the battery negative lead for safety. Remove the spark plug wires by unscrewing their brackets holders using the screw driver and carefully removing them as a group to keep them organized. Remove the spark plugs to make it easier to remove the valve cover. Step 2: Remove the valve cover bolts Remove the 13 valve cover bolts using a 5mm hex socket. These bolts do not need to be full removed from the cover unless you are planning to change the cover bolt seals (92810411502). (If Required) Remove the small plate at the back of the cover, which is held by a 10mm bolt. Be cautious as this bolt may be seized and may require a bolt-out tool for removal. Step 3: Remove the valve cover Carefully lift and twist the valve cover to remove it from the cylinder head. Take your time to maneuver it around any obstacles such as fuel rail hoses. Step 4: Replace the seals and gaskets Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and valve cover thoroughly to ensure a proper seal. (Optional) Add a thin layer of sealant to all surfaces where the gaskets will come into contact with, with slightly thicker amount in the corners of the cam cover casket where the seal turns and arches over the cam bearing housings. Install the new cam cover gasket (92810444709). Install the new spark plug well seals (4 x 92810444308). Install the new cover bolt seals (13 x 92810411502) into the valve cover. Step 5: Reinstall the valve cover Position the valve cover back onto the cylinder head, ensuring it is properly aligned. Install the 13 valve cover bolts with new crush washers. If possible, use new bolts for better sealing. Torque the valve cover bolts to 7 ft-lbs (10 Nm). (If Required) Reinstall the small plate with its 10mm bolt, using a new crush washer if available. Securely tighten the bolt (torque specification not provided). Post Procedure Checklist Ensure all bolts are properly torqued. Verify that the spark plug wires are correctly reconnected. Wait the recommended time for the gasket maker sealant to cure and then start the engine and check for any oil leaks around the valve cover area.
