Transmission (Gearbox) and Clutch Checking Clutch Disc Wear Estimated reading: 2 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure helps you measure the wear on the clutch disc of your Porsche 944 S / S2 (16v engine). Checking the clutch disc is important to ensure it’s still thick enough to work properly, especially since a worn disc can slip or fail, affecting performance. For the S / S2, this should be done at least every 15,000 miles (24,140 km). If you drive aggressively or use the car on the track, check it every 7,500 miles (12,070 km) or at the end of each race season. Tools Required Metric socket set Jack stands Floor jack Ruler or measuring device (with mm markings) Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Lift the Vehicle Use a floor jack to carefully raise the Porsche 944 S / S2, then secure it on jack stands. Make sure the car is stable and level before working underneath. Step 2: Locate and Access the Inspection Port Find the round inspection port on the left side of the clutch housing (about 25mm (1 inch) in diameter). Remove the rubber dust cover from the port, if it’s still there. On most 944 S / S2’s, this cover is likely missing, so you may already see the opening. Step 3: Measure the Clutch Slave Cylinder Piston Use a ruler to measure the distance from the front edge of the inspection port (the side closest to the front of the car) to the edge of the clutch slave cylinder piston. The S / S2’s 16v setup makes this easier to see since there’s no turbo crossover pipe in the way. Note the measurement in millimeters. Step 4: Check the Measurement Compare your measurement to the specs: A new clutch disc on the 944 S / S2 measures about 18mm. If your measurement is 34mm or more, the clutch disc is too worn and needs replacing. Post Procedure Checklist Double-check your measurement to confirm it’s accurate. Ensure the car is safely lowered from the jack stands after finishing. If the clutch disc needs replacing, plan to follow the clutch replacement procedure soon.
