Body Hood Strut Replacement – 2.5L NA Estimated reading: 3 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure outlines the steps to replace the hood struts on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine, covering models from 1983 to 1988. Hood struts support the hood when open, and worn struts can cause the hood to fall unexpectedly, posing a safety risk. This guide ensures a safe and straightforward replacement, with tips to avoid common issues like windshield damage during installation. An assistant is recommended to help support the hood. Tools Required Needle nose pliers Flat tip screwdriver Hood prop (e.g., a broomstick cut to approximately 120 cm (47 inches)) Parts Required Hood strut (944 511 351 01), 2 required Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the Hood Raise the hood fully and secure it with a hood prop. A broomstick cut to approximately 120 cm (47 inches) works well. Ensure the prop is stable to prevent the hood from falling. Step 2: Remove the Old Hood Strut (One Side) Use needle nose pliers to remove the spring clip from the hood strut retaining pin on one side. If the clip is stuck, gently pry it off with a flat tip screwdriver. While an assistant supports the hood, remove the retaining pins from both ends of the strut and take the old strut off the vehicle. Step 3: Install the New Hood Strut Position the new hood strut (944 511 351 01) in place, aligning the mounting points. Insert the retaining pins to secure the strut. If the strut is compressed with a strap, do not cut the strap until the strut is aligned and ready to be pinned. Raise the hood slightly higher if needed to fit the new strut, but ensure the hood’s rear edges do not press against the windshield, as this can cause cracking. Reinstall the spring clips onto the retaining pins to lock them in place. Step 4: Repeat for the Other Side Repeat steps 2–7 for the other side, replacing the second hood strut. Step 5: Remove the Hood Prop With both new struts installed, carefully remove the hood prop and test the hood’s operation by raising and lowering it to ensure the struts hold it securely. Post Procedure Checklist Verify that both hood struts are securely attached with retaining pins and spring clips. Check that the hood opens and closes smoothly and stays open without support. Inspect the windshield for any signs of stress or cracking caused during installation. Ensure no tools or debris are left in the engine compartment.
