Pink and blue text represent links to additional resources, tools, parts, and partner websites. Tools Required Metric Wrench Set (10mm to 17mm, 3/8 inch to 11/16 inch) Metric Socket Set (10mm to 17mm, 3/8 inch to 11/16 inch) Ramps or Jack Stands and Floor Jack Flathead Screwdriver (small, 3mm to 5mm tip) Required Additional Procedures Steps in these procedures are required to complete this process: Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1 Flywheel Lock Installation Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Removal Oil Pan Gasket Replacement Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Safely elevate the car using ramps or jack stands and a floor jack. Ensure the vehicle is stable before working underneath. Disconnect the positive battery lead to prevent electrical issues during the procedure. Step 2: Set Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) Follow this link to ensure this step – Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1 – is completed accurately to align the engine correctly. Step 3: Install Flywheel Lock Follow this link to ensure this step – Flywheel Lock Installation – is completed accurately to secure the crankshaft. Remove the starter motor as part of this procedure to access the flywheel. Step 4: Remove Timing and Balance Shaft Belts Follow this link to ensure this step – Camshaft and Balance Shaft Belt Removal – is completed accurately to remove the timing belt, balance shaft belt, rollers, balance shaft sprockets, crankshaft gear, and rear timing cover. Remove the crankshaft gear Woodruff key from the crankshaft using a small flathead screwdriver. Step 5: Lower or Remove Oil Pan Choose whether to fully remove or partially lower the oil pan: For full removal: Follow this link to ensure this step – Oil Pan Gasket Replacement – is completed accurately to remove the oil pan from the vehicle. For partial lowering: Using a 10mm wrench or socket, loosen the oil pan retaining bolts enough to lower the front of the oil pan slightly (approximately 2–3 cm or 1 inch). Support the pan with a jack or block to prevent damage (recommended by Pelican Parts). Step 6: Remove Oil Pump Using a 10mm wrench or socket, remove the M6 oil pump retaining bolts. For the M10 bolt, use a 17mm wrench or socket. Carefully slide the oil pump off the end of the crankshaft. Step 7: Inspect Oil Pump Components Remove the oil pump drive gear from the pump. Inspect the drive gear for a ridge or wear that could prevent proper sealing with the crankshaft oil seal. If a ridge or significant wear is present, note that replacement may be needed during installation: For Pre-85.5 models: Replacement sleeve/drive gear: 944 107 161 01. For 85.5 Onwards models: Replacement sleeve/drive gear: 944 107 161 02. Remove the main oil pump seal from the oil pump housing for inspection or replacement. Post Procedure Checklist Verify the engine remains set to TDC on cylinder 1. Ensure all removed components (e.g., oil pump, belts, sprockets) are stored safely to prevent damage. Check that the oil pan is secure (if not removed) or properly stored (if removed). Confirm all tools and debris are removed from the engine bay and under the vehicle. Ensure the vehicle remains stable on ramps or jack stands for further maintenance or installation.
