Body Rear Hatch Strut Replacement Estimated reading: 2 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure replaces the rear hatch struts on your Porsche 944 with a 16v engine. These struts hold the hatch open and ensure proper operation of the interior lights and rear hatch defroster. Using the correct struts is critical—wrong ones can cause electrical issues, like lights staying on or the defroster failing. Tools Required Telescoping hood prop or broom stick cut to appropriate length Needle nose pliers Parts Required Hatch Strut, Right – 944 512 348 00 Hatch Strut, Left – 944 512 349 00 Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare the Rear Hatch Open the rear hatch fully. Secure it in place using a telescoping hood prop or a broom stick cut to the right length to hold it open safely. Step 2: Disconnect Electrical Connections Locate the electrical wires connected to the hatch strut. Carefully disconnect these wires to free the strut for removal. Step 3: Remove the Old Strut Use needle nose pliers to pull back the spring clip on the socket at each end of the strut ( this is specific to the Porsche 944 S2). Slide the strut off the mounts on the body and the hatch once the clips are released. Step 4: Install the New Strut Position the new strut—Right: 944 512 348 00 or Left: 944 512 349 00—onto the mounts. Slide it into place until the spring clips snap securely onto the mounts. Reconnect the electrical wires to the new strut. Step 5: Test the Installation Remove the prop or broom stick and gently lower the hatch to test the struts. Ensure the hatch stays open on its own and closes smoothly. Post Procedure Checklist Check that the hatch opens and stays up without assistance. Verify the interior lights turn on and off correctly when the hatch is opened and closed. Confirm the rear hatch defroster works by turning it on and checking for heat.
