Overview

This guide covers the sealants approved by Porsche for use on the Porsche 944 S / S2 with its 16v engine. Sealants are critical for ensuring proper sealing of engine components, preventing leaks, and maintaining the integrity of your vehicle. Tools Required

• 10mm (3/8 inch) wrench – for general bolt removal and installation
• 13mm wrench – for specific metric bolts
• Torque wrench – capable of settings up to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs)
• Clean rags – for wiping surfaces
• Sealant applicator or small brush – for precise application

• Loctite 574 sealant – 043 010 00
• Silastic 730 RTV or Dow Corning 730 sealant (or Permatex Ultra Grey as a substitute) – 000 043 019 01

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Workspace and Components

1. Gather all tools and sealants listed above to ensure you have everything ready.
2. Clean all surfaces where sealants will be applied using clean rags to remove dirt, oil, or old sealant residue.
3. Ensure the Porsche 944 S / S2 engine is cool and the vehicle is on a level surface, approximately 5 miles (8 km) from any incline if recently driven.

Step 2: Apply Loctite 574 Sealant

4. Use 043 010 00 Loctite 574 for the engine block halves: Apply a thin, even layer to the mating surfaces of the engine block halves before assembly.
5. Apply Loctite 574 to the oil pump housing edges where it meets the engine block.
6. Coat the balance shaft cover mating surfaces with Loctite 574 before securing them.
7. Apply a small amount of Loctite 574 to the oil dipstick guide tube base where it seals against the engine.
8. Use Loctite 574 on the threads of the balance shaft sprocket retaining bolts, then tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 3: Apply Silastic 730 RTV or Substitute

9. For the oil pan gasket, apply 000 043 019 01 Silastic 730 RTV (or Permatex Ultra Grey) to both sides of the gasket corners where it meets the engine block and oil pan.
10. Secure the oil pan after applying the sealant, ensuring even pressure to avoid squeezing out excess sealant.

Step 4: Lubricate O-Rings and Seals

11. Using Dow Corning 111, lightly coat all o-rings and seals (e.g., around the oil pump or dipstick tube) before installation to improve sealing and allow for thermal expansion.

Step 5: Apply Loctite 270 to Bolts

12. Apply Loctite 270 to the threads of the oil pan insert bolts (M5) and tighten to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
13. Coat the water pump to crankcase bolts (M6) with Loctite 270 and torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
14. Apply Loctite 270 to the reference mark sensor stud on the flywheel and secure it in place.

Step 6: Apply Loctite 221 to Screws

15. Apply Loctite 221 to the rotor to camshaft connector retaining screw (M4) and tighten to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs).
16. Use Loctite 221 on the camshaft connector to camshaft sprocket dog retaining screw (M5) and torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Seal Main Oil Duct End Plugs

17. Apply Loctite 262 to the sealing surfaces of the main oil duct end plugs to prevent oil leaks.
18. Install the plugs and ensure they are fully seated.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check all sealed areas (engine block, oil pump, oil pan, etc.) for leaks after assembly.
• Verify that all bolts and screws are torqued to the specified values using a torque wrench.
• Inspect o-rings and seals for proper seating and no visible damage.
• Start the engine and let it idle for 5-10 minutes, then recheck for leaks around all sealed components.
