Removing the bumper cover is essential for accessing the front end for maintenance, such as radiator repairs, headlight adjustments, or replacing damaged components. The procedure has been adapted for the 8-valve engine, as the original Clark’s Garage article references the 944 Turbo. Tools Required

• Phillips head screwdriver
• 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and ratchet
• Floor jack
• Jack stands (2)
• Flathead screwdriver (optional for prying clips)

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

1. Park the car on a flat surface and engage the parking brake to ensure it remains stationary.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack, placing it under the front crossmember for stability.
3. Position two jack stands under the front jacking points, located just behind the front wheels, to support the car securely.
4. Lower the floor jack until the car rests fully on the jack stands, providing at least 0.3 meters (1 foot) of clearance for working underneath.

Step 2: Remove the Turn Signal and Side Marker Lights (Combined 83-88)

5. Locate the turn signal and side marker lights on both sides of the front bumper cover, integrated into the bumper assembly.
6. Remove the single Phillips head screw securing each turn signal lens, accessible from the front of the lens.
7. Pull the turn signal assembly gently forward and disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling the plug.
8. For each side marker light, remove the Phillips screw, then carefully pry the assembly out with a flathead screwdriver if needed, and disconnect the wiring.
9. Store the light assemblies in a safe place to avoid damage during the procedure.

Step 3: Remove the Bumper Cover Mounting Bolts

10. (83-85.5) Locate four 10mm (3/8 inch) bolts securing the bumper cover, two on each side, positioned in the wheel wells near the fender edges. Remove these bolts using a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket.
11. (86-88) Locate six 10mm (3/8 inch) bolts, three on each side, with two in the wheel wells and one near the top of the fender. Use a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket to remove them.
12. (Combined 83-88) From underneath the car, find two 10mm (3/8 inch) bolts attaching the bumper cover to the lower front support beam. Remove these bolts, ensuring the socket is firmly seated to prevent stripping.

Step 4: Detach the Bumper Cover

13. (Combined 83-88) Gently pull the bumper cover forward to disengage the clips securing it to the fenders and front support beam. If clips resist, use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry them loose, taking care not to damage the cover.
14. (83-85.5) Note that early models use metal clips, which may be tighter and require extra effort to release without bending. Proceed slowly to preserve the clips.
15. (86-88) Late models use plastic clips, which may be brittle due to age. Apply gentle, even pressure to avoid breaking them.
16. Once all clips are released, slide the bumper cover forward and off the car, ensuring no wiring or components are entangled. Place it in a safe area to prevent scratches.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Inspect the bumper cover for cracks or damage, particularly around the clip and bolt mounting points.
• Store all bolts and screws in a labeled container to ensure they’re available for reinstallation.
• Check the turn signal and side marker light assemblies and their wiring for signs of wear or corrosion, addressing any issues before reassembly.
