Clock and Temperature Controls Removal and Replacement – 2.5L NA

Overview

This procedure guides you through removing and replacing the clock, cigarette lighter, temperature control unit, or their associated light bulbs in a Porsche 944 with a 16v engine (1983–1988). This process is essential for maintaining or repairing the dashboard’s functionality and aesthetics. The procedure accounts for both pre-1985.5 and 1985.5-onwards models, with specific steps clearly marked where differences apply.

Tools Required

• Stubby Phillips head screwdriver
• Regular Phillips head screwdriver (optional, stubby can be used for all steps)
• Small flat tip screwdriver
• Needle-nose pliers
• Putty knife (optional, for loosening stuck trim)

Parts Required

• Replacement clock (if needed)- 944 641 301 00
• Replacement cigarette lighter (if needed)- 944 652 103 00
• Replacement temperature control unit (if needed)- 944 653 021 00
• Replacement light bulb for fan speed control knob or cigarette lighter (if needed)- 900 631 103 90

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Remove the Temperature Control Unit

1. Carefully remove the four control knobs from the temperature control unit. For the fan speed control knob, proceed with caution to avoid breaking the light bulb or retaining tabs. If necessary, gently insert a small flat tip screwdriver behind the knob to apply light pressure while pulling it off.
2. Use a small flat tip screwdriver to carefully pry under each outside edge of the temperature control unit cover to loosen and remove it.
3. Locate and remove the four Phillips head screws behind the temperature control unit cover using a stubby or regular Phillips head screwdriver.
4. Slide the temperature control unit forward, disconnect the electrical connector plug on the back, and remove the unit from the dashboard.

Step 2: Access the Clock and Cigarette Lighter

5. Open the passenger-side door (left-hand drive cars). Locate the side trim panel next to the vent and remove the single Phillips head screw using a stubby Phillips head screwdriver. Slide the panel slightly toward the front of the car to disengage its tabs.

For Pre-85.5 models:
Ensure the trim panel tabs are fully disengaged before pulling, as older models may have tighter fittings.

For 85.5 Onwards models:
The trim panel may slide more easily due to updated tab designs, but check for any adhesive residue.

6. Behind the side trim panel, locate and remove the bottom Phillips head screw securing the main trim panel.
7. Carefully pry off the rectangular trim cover next to the passenger-side vent control lever using a small flat tip screwdriver.
8. Remove the two Phillips head screws located behind the rectangular trim cover.
9. Remove the temperature sensor intake cover by turning it 90° counter-clockwise using needle-nose pliers. Handle carefully to avoid breaking the vents on the cover.
10. Remove the single Phillips head screw behind the temperature sensor vent cover.
11. Pull the right side of the main trim piece outward. If it feels stuck, check for resistance from the right-side vent slider or upholstery. Gently push the vent slider head through its slot to avoid damage, and use a putty knife to carefully pry around the edges if adhered to the upholstery. Slide the left edge of the clock trim panel out from behind the temperature control unit.

Step 3: Replace Components

12. With the trim panel removed, access the clock or cigarette lighter. Disconnect their electrical connectors and remove them if replacement is needed. Replace light bulbs (900 631 103 90) as necessary by carefully twisting or pulling them from their sockets.

Step 4: Reinstall Components

13. Position the clock trim panel back in place, ensuring the left edge slides behind the temperature control unit.
14. Reinstall the temperature control unit by reconnecting its electrical connector and sliding it back into the dashboard. Secure it with the four Phillips head screws (tighten to 5 Nm (3.7 ft-lbs)).
15. Reattach the temperature control unit cover by pressing gently on the outside edges to engage the retaining clips.
16. Reinstall the four control knobs, taking care with the fan speed control knob to avoid damaging the light bulb or retaining tabs.
17. Reinstall the single Phillips head screw in the temperature sensor intake opening and reattach the round vent cover by inserting it carefully and rotating it 90° clockwise.
18. Reinstall the two Phillips head screws beside the passenger-side vent control lever and reattach the rectangular trim cover.
19. Reinstall the bottom Phillips head screw on the main trim panel behind the side trim panel.
20. Reattach the side trim panel by sliding it back into place, engaging the tabs, and securing it with the single Phillips head screw using a stubby Phillips head screwdriver.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify that the temperature control unit functions correctly (fan speed, heat, and air distribution).
• Check that the clock operates and its light bulb illuminates (if replaced).
• Ensure the cigarette lighter works and its light bulb functions (if replaced).
• Inspect all trim pieces for secure fitment and no rattling.
• Confirm no screws or tools are left inside the dashboard.
