Step 2: Disassemble the Speedometer Separate the speedometer from the instrument cluster based on your model year: For Pre-85.5 models: Push on the back of the speedometer to slide it out of the front of the instrument cluster. Use a small flat-tip screwdriver to pry up the back lip of the bezel around the speedometer’s front. Work around the circumference until the bezel is free. Remove the screws on the back of the speedometer housing using a Phillips head screwdriver. Once removed, the speedometer internals will slide out of the housing. For 85.5 Onwards models: Remove the gauge cluster front cover by unscrewing the nine Phillips head screws along the back edge of the cluster. Locate and remove the four screws on the back of the instrument cluster directly behind the speedometer using a Phillips head screwdriver. This allows the speedometer to be removed from the gauge cluster chassis. Step 3: Inspect the Odometer Gear Hold the speedometer with the front facing away from you and locate the worm gear on the left side. The worm gear is a white plastic screw-like component. Check the gear that engages the worm gear to drive the odometer. This gear may have slid along its shaft, become worn, or broken. If the gear has slid out of place but is not damaged, use a small flat-tip screwdriver to slide it back along the shaft until it engages the worm gear. Apply a small drop of Crazy Glue to the shaft where it passes through the gear to secure it and prevent future sliding. If the gear is not worn or broken, the repair is complete. Proceed to Step 6 to reassemble. If the gear is worn or broken, continue to Step 4 for replacement. Step 4: Disassemble the Speedometer for Gear Replacement If your speedometer has a mechanical stop pin at 0 mph (common in pre-85.5 models), gently lift the speedometer needle over the stop pin and let it fully release to its resting position. Mark this position on the gauge face with a pencil for accurate reassembly. If there is no mechanical stop, skip to the next instruction. Gently pry up the speedometer needle with a small flat-tip screwdriver to remove it from its shaft. Remove the two Phillips head screws securing the speedometer face plate. Under the face plate, locate and remove the four screws that hold the two halves of the speedometer together using a Phillips head screwdriver. Separate the speedometer halves to access the odometer gears. Step 5: Replace the Odometer Gear Identify the faulty gear that needs replacement. For pre-85.5 models, this is typically a 17 tooth gear. For 85.5 onwards models, it is usually a 20 x 21 tooth gear, though some may require a 20 x 22 tooth gear. Remove the gears to access the faulty one: Start with the gear furthest from the one to be replaced. This gear is held by a pin, which can be pushed out using a jeweler’s screwdriver or a small paper clip. Remove the remaining gears, which are secured by small e-clips. Use a small flat-tip screwdriver to carefully pry off the e-clips (note that reinstalling e-clips can be challenging). Replace the faulty gear with the new one, ensuring it is properly seated on its shaft. Reinstall the gears in reverse order, securing each with its respective e-clip or pin. Step 6: Reassemble the Speedometer and Instrument Cluster Reassemble the speedometer by reversing the disassembly steps: Reattach the two halves of the speedometer and secure with the four screws.
