Electrical Removing Late 944 (1985.5 and newer) Gauge Cluster – 2.5L NA Estimated reading: 3 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure outlines the steps to remove the gauge cluster from a Porsche 944 with an 8-valve engine configuration, specifically for models from 1985.5 onwards. The gauge cluster houses critical instruments like the speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge. Removing it is necessary for tasks such as replacing bulbs, repairing gauges, or upgrading the cluster. This guide is tailored for DIY enthusiasts working on 1985.5–1988 models, with distinctions for pre-1985.5 models where applicable. Tools Required Phillips screwdriver (stubby recommended) 24mm (15/16 inch) socket and ratchet Scribe, paint pen, or brightly colored nail polish Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Remove the Steering Wheel Locate the horn button in the center of the steering wheel. Gently pry off the horn button and disconnect the electrical spade connector on its back. Use a 24mm (15/16 inch) socket and ratchet to remove the steering wheel retaining nut and washer. Mark the steering wheel’s orientation on the steering shaft using a scribe, paint pen, or nail polish to ensure correct alignment during reassembly. Carefully pull the steering wheel off the steering shaft. This provides better access to the gauge cluster. Step 2: Remove the Gauge Cluster Trim Piece Locate the three Phillips head screws on the top of the plastic trim piece surrounding the gauge cluster. Remove these screws using a Phillips screwdriver. A stubby screwdriver is recommended for better access. Find the two Phillips head screws at the bottom of the trim piece, on either side of the steering column, and remove them. Identify the vents in the center of the dashboard, which are part of the trim piece. Remove the three Phillips head screws in the vent area: one on the far right of the instrument cluster and two closer to the cluster. Lift the bottom edge of the trim piece behind the steering column to clear the column trim. Pull down slightly on the top of the trim piece to clear the dashboard, then slide the trim piece out. Step 3: Remove the Gauge Cluster Locate the four Phillips head screws securing the gauge cluster to the dashboard and remove them. Gently slide the gauge cluster forward to access the electrical connectors on the back. Caution: Be extremely careful when moving the cluster to avoid damaging the ribbon circuit board on the back, which can tear if it catches on the dashboard edges. Reach behind the cluster to locate the three electrical plug connectors. Push outward on the locking levers of each connector to release and remove them from the cluster. Tilt the cluster slightly and slide one end out first to remove it from the dashboard. Push up on the dashboard opening if needed for clearance. Caution: Move slowly to avoid damaging the ribbon circuit board. Step 4: Reinstall the Gauge Cluster Reverse the removal steps to reinstall the gauge cluster. Align the steering wheel with the marked orientation during reassembly to ensure proper positioning. Post Procedure Checklist Verify all electrical connectors are securely reattached. Check that the gauge cluster functions correctly (e.g., speedometer, tachometer, and warning lights). Ensure the steering wheel is aligned properly and the horn button works. Confirm the trim piece is securely fastened with no loose screws.
