Engine Oil Change – 2.5L NA

Overview

This procedure outlines how to change the engine oil on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine, excluding the oil filter replacement. Regular oil changes are essential for maintaining engine longevity and performance. This guide is tailored for pre-1985.5 (1983–1985.5) and 1985.5 onwards (1986–1988) models, with model-specific distinctions clearly marked where applicable.

Tools Required

• 17mm (11/16 inch) socket and ratchet or 17mm (11/16 inch) combination wrench
• Jack stands and floor jack or ramps
• Drain pan
• Catch rags

Parts Required

• Engine oil: Approximately 5.5 liters (5.8 US quarts) to fill to the upper dipstick mark
• Oil drain plug seal ring: 900 123 049 30 (26 x 32 mm)
• Optional replacement oil pan drain plug (if damaged): N 016 164 1 (M20 x 1.5)

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

1. Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil, allowing it to flow better and carry away more sludge and deposits.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack and secure it on jack stands or place it on ramps for safe access to the undercarriage.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Skid Pan (If Present)

3. Check if your Porsche 944 has a rear skid pan covering the oil pan. Most 944s no longer have this, but if present, it must be removed to access the oil pan drain plug.

For Pre-85.5 models:

Use a 13mm socket to remove the bolts securing the rear skid pan, then carefully lower it.

For 85.5 Onwards models:

Use a 13mm socket to remove the bolts securing the rear skid pan, then carefully lower it. Note that later models may have slightly different bolt patterns, so ensure all bolts are removed.

Step 3: Drain the Engine Oil

4. Place a drain pan beneath the oil pan, directly under the drain plug.
5. Using a 17mm socket and ratchet or 17mm combination wrench, remove the oil pan drain plug and allow the oil to drain completely for several minutes.
6. Inspect the oil pan drain plug seal ring (900 123 049 30). Replace it if it has scratches, gouges, or deformation to prevent leaks.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

7. Reinstall the oil pan drain plug with a new seal ring (900 123 049 30) and torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 5: Refill the Engine with Oil

8. Remove the oil fill cap and fill the engine with approximately 5.5 liters (5.8 US quarts) of new engine oil, checking the dipstick to ensure the level reaches at least the upper mark.
9. Replace the oil fill cap securely.

Step 6: Start the Engine and Check Oil Pressure

10. Start the engine and verify that the oil pressure gauge indicates normal pressure (typically 3–5 bar at idle, per Porsche 944 Workshop Manuals).
11. Allow the engine to run for 1–2 minutes, then shut it off.

Step 7: Lower the Vehicle and Final Oil Level Check

12. If using jack stands, ensure the engine is off, then carefully lower the vehicle to level ground. If using ramps, drive the vehicle off the ramps.
13. Allow the engine to sit for 5–10 minutes to let the oil settle back into the oil pan.
14. With the vehicle on level ground, check the oil level using the dipstick and top off with additional oil if necessary to reach the upper mark.

Step 8: Dispose of Used Oil

15. Transfer the used oil from the drain pan to a sealed container and take it to an approved recycling or disposal facility.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify the oil pan drain plug is torqued to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs) and shows no signs of leaks.
• Confirm the oil level is at or near the upper dipstick mark with the vehicle on level ground.
• Check for normal oil pressure (3–5 bar at idle) when the engine is running.
• Ensure all tools and rags are removed from the engine compartment and undercarriage.
• Confirm the used oil is disposed of properly at an approved facility.
