Air Filter Housing and Air Flow Sensor – Removal -2.5L NA

Overview

This procedure guides you through removing the air filter housing and air flow sensor on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine, covering pre-1985.5 and 1985.5 onwards variants. Removing these components is necessary for maintenance tasks such as replacing the air filter or accessing other engine components. Tools Required

• Medium flat tip screwdriver
• 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and ratchet
• 13mm (1/2 inch) socket and ratchet
• Flat tip jeweler’s screwdriver or straight probe

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Remove the Air Filter Cover and Breather Hose

1. Using a medium flat tip screwdriver, loosen the clamp on the air filter cover and remove the cover along with the air filter.

For Pre-85.5 models:
Disconnect the breather hose (944 107 147 03) from the air filter housing by loosening its clamp with a medium flat tip screwdriver. It may be easier to remove the cover and breather hose together.

For 85.5 Onwards models:
Note that later models may have the breather hose connection capped or absent. If present, disconnect it as described for Pre-85.5 models.

Step 2: Disconnect the Air Flow Sensor

2. Loosen the clamp securing the rubber inlet plenum boot (944 110 185 02) to the air flow sensor using a medium flat tip screwdriver.
3. Using a flat tip jeweler’s screwdriver or straight probe, push back the ends of the wire retaining clip on the air flow sensor electrical connector (944 606 121 00) until they rest on the side of the connector.
4. Slide the electrical connector off the air flow sensor plug.
5. Locate the small red plastic clip and L-bracket securing two electrical wires to the air flow sensor. Remove the single 10mm bolt attaching the L-bracket to the air flow sensor assembly using a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and ratchet. Avoid pulling the red plastic clip to prevent breakage.

Step 3: Remove the Air Filter Housing

6. Remove the two 13mm bolts at the front of the air filter housing, which attach it to the bracket at the radiator cross-member, using a 13mm (1/2 inch) socket and ratchet.
7. Remove the two 10mm bolts at the back of the air filter housing, which attach it to a mounting bracket, using a 10mm (3/8 inch) socket and ratchet.
8. Lift the air flow sensor and air filter housing out of the car as a single unit, taking care not to damage the rubber inlet plenum boot (944 110 185 02).

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify that all bolts and the L-bracket have been removed and stored safely for reinstallation.
• Check that the air flow sensor electrical connector and wires are undamaged and free from the assembly.
• Inspect the rubber inlet plenum boot (944 110 185 02) for tears or wear, replacing if necessary.
• For Pre-85.5 models, ensure the breather hose (944 107 147 03) is undamaged and stored properly.
• Confirm no tools or debris are left in the engine compartment.
