Fuel and Ignition Distributor Cap and Rotor Replacement – 2.5L NA Estimated reading: 4 minutes Contributors Overview This procedure outlines the steps to replace the distributor cap and rotor on all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve, covering both pre-1985.5 and 1985.5 onwards variants. The distributor cap directs electrical current to the spark plugs, and the rotor spins to distribute this current. Regular replacement ensures optimal ignition performance and prevents misfires. The process involves removing and installing the cap, secured by 90° locking screws, and the rotor, attached to the camshaft extension. Tools Required 1/8 inch (3mm) hex key Long thin blade flat tip screwdriver (recommended: Snap-On SDD1416 or MATCO SCM818P2 with a 16 inch blade, 0.028 x 7/32 inch tip) Channel lock pliers (optional, for rotor removal if stuck) Parts Required Distributor cap (944 602 902 00) Distributor rotor (944 602 901 00) Allen head retaining screw (999 170 013 90) (optional, if original is stripped) Step-by-Step Procedure Step 1: Prepare for Distributor Cap Removal Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap by gently pulling them off. Label each wire to ensure correct reinstallation. Using paint or nail polish, mark the bottom half of the top locking screw and the top half of the bottom locking screw on the distributor cap. This helps track screw orientation. Step 2: Remove the Distributor Cap Using a long thin blade flat tip screwdriver, push in on the bottom locking screw and turn it clockwise 270°. The painted half of the screw head should point toward the exhaust manifold side of the car. Push in on the top locking screw and turn it clockwise 90°. The painted half of the screw head should also point toward the exhaust manifold side. Gently slide the distributor cap off the housing. If it resists, ensure both screws are fully disengaged. Step 3: Remove the Rotor Locate the Allen head retaining screw securing the rotor to the camshaft extension. Using a 1/8 inch hex key, attempt to loosen the retaining screw. If it’s too tight, try a 3mm hex key, but avoid stripping the screw head. Remove the screw and set it aside carefully to avoid dropping it into the distributor housing. Twist the rotor to remove it from the camshaft extension. If it’s stuck, gently twist with channel lock pliers on the metal sleeve inside the rotor. Note: The rotor is made of brittle Bakelite and may break; this is normal if it’s bonded to the camshaft. Step 4: Install the New Rotor Slide the new rotor (944 602 901 00) onto the camshaft extension, ensuring it seats fully. Insert the Allen head retaining screw (999 170 013 90 if replacing) and tighten it using a 1/8 inch or 3mm hex key. Be cautious not to drop the screw into the distributor housing. Step 5: Install the New Distributor Cap Hold the new distributor cap (944 602 902 00) in its normal orientation (one locking screw on top, one on bottom). Turn both locking screws so their 90° tips point to the left (when looking at the front of the cap). Using paint or nail polish, mark the left half of each screw head (the side closest to the screw tip). Position the cap over the rotor, aligning the screw tips with the elongated holes in the housing. Slide the cap into place, ensuring it’s centered. Using a long thin blade flat tip screwdriver, turn the bottom locking screw 270° counter-clockwise. The painted half of the screw head should point upward or toward the center of the cap. Turn the top locking screw 90° counter-clockwise. The painted half of the screw head should point downward or toward the center of the cap. Reconnect the spark plug wires to the distributor cap, ensuring they are attached in the correct order as labeled. Post Procedure Checklist Verify that the distributor cap is securely locked in place and does not move when gently tugged. Check that the rotor spins freely and is firmly attached to the camshaft extension. Confirm all spark plug wires are correctly connected and seated. Start the engine and listen for smooth operation, checking for misfires or irregular idling. Inspect the distributor area for any tools or debris left behind.
