Manual Transaxle Fluid Change – 2.5L NA

Overview

This procedure outlines the steps to change the manual transaxle fluid in all Porsche 944 variants with an 8-valve engine configuration, covering both pre-1985.5 (83-85.5) and 1985.5 onwards (86-88) variants. Regular fluid changes, recommended every 60,000 miles (96,560 km), maintain smooth shifting and reduce transaxle wear. The process involves draining old fluid and refilling with fresh fluid, ensuring optimal performance.

Tools Required

• 17mm (11/16 inch) Allen head socket or hex key
• Jack stands
• Floor jack or ramps
• Drain pan (at least 1 gallon or 3.8 liters)
• 4 feet (1.2 meters) of hose
• Funnel
• Torque wrench

Parts Required

• Transaxle fluid (approximately 2.75 quarts or 2.6 liters), hypoid transmission oil SAE 75W90 (API GL5 or MIL-L 2105 B) or SAE 80 (API GL4 or MIL-L 2105), or alternatives like Redline Synthetic MTL, Swepco 201, or Mobil 1 75W/90 gear oil
• Drain plug washer (if required, check condition), 944 321 289 00
• Fill plug washer (if required, check condition), 944 321 289 00

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Warm Up the Transaxle Fluid

1. Drive the vehicle for 5-10 miles (8-16 km) to warm the transaxle fluid, making it easier to drain.

Step 2: Raise the Vehicle

2. Securely raise the rear of the vehicle using jack stands or ramps. Jack stands are preferred for more working space around the transaxle.

Step 3: Remove the Fill Plug

3. Locate the fill and drain plugs on the left side of the transaxle. The fill plug is the upper one.
4. Using a 17mm (11/16 inch) Allen head socket or hex key, remove the fill plug first to ensure it can be opened before draining the fluid.

Step 4: Prepare the New Fluid

5. Warm the new transaxle fluid to improve flow. Place the fluid containers in front of a halogen heat lamp for about 20 minutes. Do not use a microwave.

Step 5: Drain the Transaxle

6. Position a drain pan (at least 1 gallon or 3.8 liters) under the transaxle drain plug.
7. Remove the drain plug using a 17mm (11/16 inch) Allen head socket or hex key and allow the fluid to drain completely.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

8. Inspect the drain plug washer (944 321 289 00). Replace if damaged.
9. Reinstall the drain plug and torque to 24 Nm (18 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 7: Fill the Transaxle with New Fluid

10. Route 4 feet (1.2 meters) of hose over the left rear wheel and exhaust to the fill hole on the transaxle.
11. Insert a funnel into the hose and pour approximately 2.75 quarts (2.6 liters) of new transaxle fluid until the level is 6-8 mm (0.24-0.31 inches) below the bottom of the fill hole or just at the bottom.

Step 8: Reinstall the Fill Plug

12. Inspect the fill plug washer (944 321 289 00). Replace if damaged.
13. Reinstall the fill plug and torque to 24 Nm (18 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle

14. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands or ramps.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Check for leaks around the drain and fill plugs after driving a short distance, approximately 5 miles (8 km).
• Verify smooth shifting, especially when the transaxle is cold.
• Ensure no unusual noises from the transaxle during operation.
