CV Joints – Removal

Removing the CV joints is necessary for maintenance, inspection, or replacement when issues like clicking noises or boot damage are detected. This procedure focuses on safely detaching the axles from the transaxle and wheel hub, preparing them for further maintenance or replacement.

Tools Required

• 8mm (5/16 inch) 12-point internal tool (also known as a “cheesehead” or “triple square” tool)
• Metric socket set
• Paint marker or bright-colored nail polish
• Jack and jack stands
• Wheel blocks
• Solvent (mineral spirits or brake cleaner)
• Wire brush
• Rags

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake to prevent movement.
2. Place wheel blocks in front of and behind the front tires to secure the vehicle.
3. Use a jack to lift the rear of the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands to ensure safety during the procedure.

Step 2: Mark Axle Orientation

4. Use a paint marker or bright-colored nail polish to mark the orientation of the drive axles relative to the transaxle and wheel hub. This ensures correct reassembly later.

Step 3: Clean Bolts for Removal

5. Inspect the cheesehead bolts on the CV joints for caked grease or debris, which can make removal difficult.
6. Use a wire brush and solvent (mineral spirits or brake cleaner) to clean the bolts thoroughly, preventing damage to the bolts or the 8mm 12-point tool during removal.

Step 4: Remove Axle Bolts

7. Use the 8mm (5/16 inch) 12-point internal tool to loosen the cheesehead bolts securing the axle to the transaxle and wheel hub. Start with the transaxle side, then move to the wheel hub side.
8. Hold the wheel steady to prevent rotation while loosening the bolts. If the vehicle is low enough, place a block under the wheel. Alternatively, engage the parking brake, place the transaxle in gear, or have an assistant hold the wheel.
9. Remove all cheesehead bolts and set them aside, noting any damaged bolts for replacement.

Step 5: Remove the Axle

10. Carefully lower the drive axle from the vehicle, ensuring not to damage the CV joint boots (944 331 903 00) or other components.

11. Place the axle on a clean working surface to prevent contamination of the CV joint components.

Post Procedure Checklist

• Verify that all cheesehead bolts have been removed and stored safely.
• Check that the axle is free from the transaxle and wheel hub with no components stuck.
• Inspect the CV joint boots (944 331 903 00) for any new damage caused during removal.
• Ensure the vehicle remains securely on jack stands for further maintenance or until reassembly.
